Usage

Monistat (Miconazole nitrate) is an over-the-counter medication used to treat vaginal yeast infections. These infections occur when there is an overgrowth of a fungus called candida. This infection causes burning, itching, and changes to the consistency of your vaginal discharge. The active substance in Monistat is Miconazole nitrate. Miconazole nitrate belongs to a class of medication called imidazoles. It works by stopping the growth of the fungi causing the infection.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Monistat are lower abdominal cramps, vaginal itching, headache, and frequent urination.

Stop using Monistat and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Signs of an allergic reaction such as breathing difficulties, hives, swelling of the face, lips, or throat

Warnings and Interactions

Before using Miconazole nitrate, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it or have any other allergies. Monistat comes as a vaginal cream. Do not take this medicine by mouth. It is for use only in your vagina. Wash your hands before and after using the drug. Insert the cream into your vagina using the applicator provided. You can use a sanitary napkin to prevent the medication from staining your clothing. Do not use a tampon. Use this medication for the full prescribed length of time, even during your menstrual period. Your symptoms may improve before the infection is completely cleared. Skipping doses may cause a further infection that is resistant to Monistat. Avoid getting the medication in your eyes. If this happens, rinse with water. Avoid wearing tight-fitting or synthetic clothing that does not allow air circulation. Wear loose-fitting clothing made of cotton and natural fibers until your infection is healed. Monistat may damage a condom or diaphragm. Use another form of birth control when using this medication.

Before you start using Monistat, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:
• Abdominal pain;
• Diabetes;
• Fever;
• Foul-smelling discharge;
• HIV or AIDS

Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. It is not known if Monistat will harm the unborn baby. Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. It is unknown if Monistat passes into breast milk. The use of Monistat should be avoided in children less than 12 years old. There may be a drug interaction between Monistat and other drugs, such as warfarin and progesterone.
