Dosage

Usage

Evotaz (Atazanavir/Cobicistat) is a combined prescription medication used with other antiretroviral medicines used to treat people with HIV infection by decreasing the amount of HIV-1 infection in their body. The active ingredients in Evotaz are Atazanavir and Cobicistat. It belongs to the class of drugs known as Antiretroviral therapy combos (ART). The Atazanavir is a Protease inhibitor, which selectively inhibits the cleavage of Gag-Pol polyprotein precursors, thereby preventing the formation of mature virus particles. The Cobicistat is a CYP3A4 inhibitor, and it is used to increase ("boost") the levels of Atazanavir. Evotaz is not a cure for HIV infection. It would be best to keep taking HIV medicines to control HIV infection and decrease HIV-related illnesses.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Evotaz are nausea, vomiting, headache, diarrhea, fatigue, abdominal pain, yellowing of the skin, rash, and muscle weakness.

Stop using Evotaz and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the severe side effects such as:
• Extremely yellowness of the eyes;
• Gastrointestinal disorders: Diarrhea, vomiting, upper abdominal pain;
• Hematuria or blood in the urine;
• Nephrolithiasis;
• Psychiatric disorders: Depression, abnormal dreams, insomnia;
• Renal and urinary disorders: Nephropathy, Fanconi syndrome;
• Signs and symptoms of Diabetes mellitus such as excessive urination, excessive eating, and glycosuria

Warnings and Interactions

Before taking Evotaz, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to Atazanavir, cobicistat, or any other allergies. Evotaz is a tablet, and it should be taken orally with a cup of water, usually once a day, with other antiretroviral drugs. It is vital to continue taking this medication (and other HIV medications) exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not change your dose or stop taking Evotaz without talking to your doctor or pharmacist. Do not give Evotaz to other people, even if they have the same symptoms that you have. It may harm them. Do not have share sharps or have unprotected sexual intercourse while treating HIV with Evotaz. Do not miss your clinic appointment, and inform your doctor if you have concerns about your treatment, such as serious side effects, or if you have problems taking your medications daily. Do not stop suddenly without discussing it with your doctor.

Before you start using Evotaz, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:
• Diabetes mellitus;
• Hemophilia;
• Heart problems;
• Kidney problems;
• Liver problems, including hepatitis B or C virus infection

Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Do not use Evotaz during pregnancy because the Evotaz levels in your blood may be lower during pregnancy and may not control your HIV-1. Inform your doctor right away if you become pregnant during treatment with Evotaz. Pregnant people develop a serious condition called lactic acidosis (a build-up of lactic acid in the blood) when taking Evotaz with other HIV-1 medicines called nucleoside analogues. Do not breastfeed if you take Evotaz or if you have HIV-1. HIV-1 can be passed to the baby in breast milk. Talk to your doctor about the best way to feed your baby. There may be a drug interaction between Evotaz and other drugs such as alfuzosin, phenytoin, ranolazine, sildenafil, simvastatin, cisapride, and lomitapide.
