Usage

Zyloprim (Allopurinol) is used to lower blood uric acid and treat gout. It is also used in the prevention of increased uric acid levels in cancer chemotherapy patients and can be prescribed for the treatment of kidney stones. Allopurinol belongs to the class of medications called xanthine oxidase inhibitors. It works by reducing the productions of uric acid in the body. Zyloprim is usually recommended to be taken after a meal.

Allopurinol is used in the prevention the formation of bladder stones in dogs by inhibiting the production of uric acid. It is a commonly accepted practice for veterinarians to use this medication in dogs.

Side Effects and Precautions

Possible adverse reactions with Zyloprim (Allopurinol) are:
• skin rash (in rare cases severe reaction)
• nausea/vomiting/abdominal pain
• drowsiness, numbness and tingling of fingers and/or toes
• muscle weakness/pain
• kidney and liver disorder

In animals: Side effects when using allopurinol are not common; however, they can include vomiting and diarrhea, anemia as a result of bone marrow suppression, blood in the urine, skin rash and liver damage. Allergic reactions such as facial swelling or hives are also rare but can occur.

You should not use Allopurinol if allergic to this medication. Patients with kidney or liver disease should use with caution. Tell your doctor about all medications and supplements you use. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. It is unknown if Zyloprim will harm a fetus, however, Zyloprim passes into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding. Do not use in pregnant or lactating animals. Do not use in puppies or kittens. Always tell your veterinarian and pharmacist what other medications your pet is taking. There may be a drug interaction between Allopurinol and other medications such as warfarin, capecitabine and didanosine.
