Dosage

The brand AluGel is available in the strength of 320 mg/5 ml/425 ml suspension only. The generic Aluminum Hydroxide is not available.

Usage

AluGel (Aluminum Hydroxide) is an over-the-counter medication used to treat the symptoms of too much stomach acid. When your stomach lining secretes excess stomach acid, it can lead to unpleasant symptoms like stomach upset, heartburn, and acid indigestion. AluGel works only on existing acid in the stomach. It does not prevent acid production. The active ingredient in AluGel is Aluminum Hydroxide. Aluminum Hydroxide belongs to the class of medication called antacids. It works by lowering the acid in the stomach.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of AluGel are appetite loss, constipation, and drowsiness.

Stop using AluGel and contact your doctor immediately if you have any of the following serious side effects such as:
• Bloody stools;
• Extreme drowsiness;
• Muscle weakness;
• Painful urination;
• Severe stomach pain;
• Signs of an allergic reaction, such as rash, breathing difficulties, swelling of the face, mouth, tongue, or throat;

Warnings and Interactions

Before taking Aluminum Hydroxide, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to any ingredient in the drug or have any other allergies. AluGel is a suspension; it should be taken orally (by mouth) as directed by your doctor. Take this medication between meals and at bedtime. Shake the bottle before each dose. Refrigerating the suspension may improve the flavor. Do not freeze. This drug works best if it is taken without other fluids. However, you can mix your dose with a little water if needed. If your acid problems persist after using this product for one week, get medical help immediately. Do not take this medication regularly for longer than two weeks without talking to your doctor. This drug can lead to constipation. Drink plenty of fluids and exercise to minimize your risk of constipation. Aluminum Hydroxide may make it difficult for your body to absorb other oral medicines. Avoid taking other drugs within 2 hours before or 2 hours after taking AluGel.

Before you start using AluGel, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you:
• Are dehydrated;
• Become pregnant or nursing a child;
• Drink alcohol frequently;
• Have kidney problems;
• Have severe constipation

Inform your doctor about all your medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. This drug should only be used in pregnancy if the benefits outweigh the risks. Aluminum Hydroxide may pass into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding. There may be a drug interaction between Aluminum Hydroxide and other drugs such as aspirin, ciprofloxacin, ascorbic acid, etc.
