Usage

Altace HCTZ (Ramipril/Hydrochlorothiazide) is a prescription medication used to treat high blood pressure. High blood pressure can lead to complications such as heart attack and stroke without proper treatment. Altace HCTZ is also used to treat congestive heart failure. The active ingredients in Altace HCTZ are Ramipril and Hydrochlorothiazide. Ramipril belongs to the class of medications called ACE (angiotensin-converting enzyme) inhibitors. It works by relaxing blood vessels and making the heart pump more efficiently. Hydrochlorothiazide belongs to the class of drugs known as diuretics. It works by eliminating excess salt and water to control blood pressure.

The common side effects of Altace HCTZ are cough, drowsiness, headache, muscle pain, and sleeping difficulties.

• Fast or irregular heartbeat;
• Skin rash

Warnings and Interactions

Before taking Ramipril/Hydrochlorothiazide, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to any ingredient in the drug or have any other allergies. Altace HCTZ is a tablet that should be taken orally (by mouth) as directed by your doctor. Swallow the tablet whole with water. Do not crush, chew, or break it. You can take this medication with or without food. Take this drug at the same time each day, preferably in the morning, to help you remember. This drug may make you dizzy or drowsy. Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs alertness until you can do it safely. To prevent dizziness, avoid getting up too fast from a sitting or lying position. This medication may increase the skin's sensitivity to sunlight, increasing the risk of sunburn. Wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen and lip balm with an SPF of 30 or greater. This drug can make you dehydrated. Drink enough fluids to prevent this risk.

Before you start using Altace HCTZ, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you:
• Are on a low-salt diet;
• Become pregnant or nursing a child;
• Have a history of angioedema;
• Have an electrolyte imbalance;
• Have blood levels of potassium;
• Have diabetes;
• Have kidney disease;
• Have low blood pressure;
• Have lupus;
• Have urination problems

Inform your doctor about all your medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Ramipril can harm an unborn baby. Use effective birth control to prevent pregnancy when using this drug. It is not known if Ramipril passes into breast milk. Hydrochlorothiazide may pass into breast milk and affect your nursing infant. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding. There may be a drug interaction between Altace HCTZ and other drugs, such as aliskiren, amiodarone, sacubitril, ibuprofen, lithium, and insulin.
