Aralen Details (Brand and Generic)

Canada Pharmacy Online currently offers the generic Aralen from India (Lariago) manufactured by IPCA and Canada by a different manufacturer. The brand Aralen is not available at this time. For more information and further assistance, please call Customer Service at 1866-920-3784.

Dosage

The generic Aralen (Chloroquine Phosphate) comes in the strength of 250 mg tablets.

Usage

Aralen is indicated to treat or prevent malaria, a disease caused by parasites that enter the body through the bite of a mosquito. It is also used to treat amoebiasis (infection caused by amoebae). Chloroquine belongs to a group of medicines known as antimalarial. Aralen is also used to reduce inflammation (pain and swelling) in the treatment of many types of arthritis and lupus. This medication is also used to treat infections caused by a different type of parasite (ameba). Aralen does not prevent malaria. Aralen may also be used to treat prophyria cutanea tarda. It works by suppressing the malaria infection, stops acute attacks, and lengthens the time between treatment and relapse.

Side Effects and Precautions

Abdominal cramps, diarrhea, headache, muscle weakness, nausea, vomiting, and also skin rashes are all side effects of which have been associated with the use of Aralen. These are in the category of less serious side effects, however if you do encounter any side effect whilst using Aralen, you should monitor them to ensure that they do not persist or appear to get worse over time. If you experience an allergic reaction to the medication and experience side effects such as flushing, swellings of the lips, tongue or face and the symptoms of a fever, you should seek emergency medical aid.

Warnings and Interactions

Before using Aralen, tell your doctor:
• If you are allergic to Chloroquine Phosphate or Hydroxychloroquine, or any other ingredients in this medication
• Your medical history, especially of diabetes, enzyme problems, eye/vision problem, kidney disease, liver disease, skin problem, seizures, etc.

Tell your doctor if you are taking any prescriptions, otc meds, supplements, and herbal products. They may be also other medications that can interact with Aralen when they are used together; these medications include ampicillin, antacids, kaolin, and mefloquine. Consult your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Don't receive any vaccination (especially a rabies vaccine) while taking chloroquine. Chloroquine may cause QT prolongation. The risk of QT prolongation increases if you have certain medical conditions or are taking other medications that may cause QT prolongation. Low levels of potassium or magnesium in the blood may also increase your risk. The use of Aralen in patients with psoriasis may precipitate a severe attack of psoriasis. Aralen should be kept away and out of reach of children because children are especially sensitive to the 4-aminoquinoline compounds.
