Dosage

The brand Aredia is available in the strength of 30 mg/vial and 90 mg/vial Injection Vial. The generic Pamidronate Disodium is available in the strength of 3 mg/ml, 6 mg/ml, 9 mg/ml, and 60 mg/vial unit injection vial.

Usage

Aredia (Pamidronate Disodium) is a prescription injection used to treat Paget disease of bone and bone damage caused by certain types of cancer such as breast cancer or bone marrow cancer. Aredia injection is also used to treat high blood levels of calcium caused by cancer (hyperglycemia of malignancy) with other antineoplastic therapy. The active ingredient in Aredia injection is Pamidronate Disodium. Pamidronate Disodium belongs to the class of medications called calcium metabolism modifiers. Aredia is a bisphosphonate medicine that alters bone formation and breakdown in the body. This can slow bone loss and may help prevent bone fractures. It would be best to know that Aredia does not treat the cancer itself.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Aredia are cough, abdominal pain, anorexia, dyspepsia, electrolyte derangement (such as low blood calcium) and injection site reaction.

Stop using Aredia and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• A seizure disorder;
• Extremely low level of potassium in the blood which may cause leg cramps, constipation, irregular heartbeats, fluttering in your chest, increased thirst, numbness or tingling, muscle weakness or limp feeling;
• High-grade fever;
• Little or no urination, swelling in your feet or ankles, feeling tired or short of breath;
• New or unusual pain in your thigh or hip;
• Symptoms suggestive of hypocalcemia such as muscle spasms or contractions, numbness or tingly feeling (around your mouth or in your fingers and toes);

Warnings and Interactions

Before receiving an Aredia injection, tell your doctor if you are allergic to Pamidronate injection, alendronate, etidronate, zoledronic acid, or other medications. Aredia comes as an injection vial and should be administered via the intravenous route. Aredia (Pamidronate Disodium) is available as an injection and is to be administered only by or under the supervision of your doctor. It would be administered by intravenous infusion slowly (over an hour or more, depending on your condition). Do not inject yourself if you do not understand how to use the injection. You should follow your doctor's instructions. How often you receive this medicine and the length of your infusion time will depend on why you are using this medicine and your doctor's judgment. Never mix Aredia with a solution that contains calcium (such as lactated Ringer's solution) or with other drugs in the same IV bag or line. Although, it may take up to a week before you start having the positive effects of this medication. If you have any complaints concerning your treatment or if your condition is getting worse, we encourage you to talk to your doctor about your treatment.

Before you start using Aredia, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:
• An electrolyte imbalance (such as low levels of potassium or magnesium in your blood);
• Heart diseases;
• Kidney disease;
• Liver disease (including hepatitis B infection);
• Previous thyroid surgery

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Inform your doctor of your pregnancy status before the time of injection of this medication. Caution is advised if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. This medication is not for use during pregnancy. It may stay in your body for several months and harm an unborn baby. Consult your doctor for information on reliable forms of birth control. It is unknown if Pamidronate passes into breast milk. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor before breastfeeding. There may be a drug interaction between Aredia and other drugs such as aluminum hydroxide, calcium carbonate, tenofovir DF, calcium chloride, dichlorphenamide and sodium citrate/citric acid.
