Usage

Binosto (Alendronate Sodium Trihydrate) is a prescription medication used to treat osteoporosis in postmenopausal women and to increase bone mass in men with osteoporosis. Osteoporosis if untreated may result in bone fracture, severe bone pain, and poor quality of life. The active substance in Binosto is Alendronate Sodium Trihydrate. Alendronate Sodium Trihydrate belongs to the class of medications called Calcium Metabolism Modifiers; Bisphosphonate Derivatives. It works by binding to hydroxyapatite crystals in bone and inhibits osteoclast-mediated bone resorption and increases the bone mass. Effective treatment of osteoporosis with Binosto effervescent tablet maintains strong bones and reduces the risk of fractures.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Binosto are stomach pain, constipation, diarrhea, flatulence, nausea, and vomiting.

Stop using Binosto and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• New or worsening heartburn;
• Numbness or tingling;
• Severe chest pain;
• Spasms, twitches, or cramps in your muscles;
• Trouble or painful swallowing

Warnings and Interactions

Before taking Binosto, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it or other bisphosphonates, or have any other allergies. Binosto comes as an effervescent tablet for an oral solution, especially for people who hate swallowing tablets or have difficulties swallowing pills. Binosto is to be taken once weekly with enough water to drink it. Take the tablet early in the morning, at least 30 minutes before you eat, drink anything or take any other medicine. Before you start using Binosto, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:
• Bone, joint, or muscle pain;
• Disorder of the esophagus such as achalasia or esophageal stricture;
• Intestinal problems such as ulcers;
• kidney problems;
• Liver problems;
• Low calcium level (hypocalcemia);
• Severe jaw bone problems (osteonecrosis)

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Alendronate may stay in your body for many years. It is advisable not to get pregnant while using alendronate. You should use an effective contraceptive method such as condom when using Binosto effervescent tablet for osteoporosis. Your doctor will discuss the risks and benefits with you. It is unknown if this medication passes into breast milk. Contact your doctor before breastfeeding. There may be a drug interaction between Binosto and other drugs such as recombinant human parathyroid hormone, and antacids. Store the tablets at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Keep unused effervescent tablets in the foil blister pack.
