Product Details

Boniva (Ibandronate Sodium) is a prescription medication used to treat or prevent osteoporosis in women after menopause. Ibandronate belongs to a group of medicines called bisphosphonates. Osteoporosis is common after the menopause because levels of estrogen drop dramatically which is needed in the cycle of bone formation. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. This medication works by slowing bone loss to help maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of fractures.

Anaphylactic allergic reaction can happen in some cases. You must seek emergency medical attention if you experience the following signs: difficulty breathing, hives, rash, swelling of the face, tongue, lips, or throat.

Common side effects of Boniva may include back pain, headache, diarrhea, upset stomach, nausea, flu symptoms, pain in the limbs, redness or swelling where the medicine was injected. The serious side effects may include:
• Chest pain, new or worsening heartburn;
• Difficulty or pain when swallowing;
• Chest pain, bone pain, joint or muscle pain;
• Pain in thighs or hips;
• Pain when swallowing, jaw pain;
• Numbness or swelling

Do not use Boniva if you are allergic to Ibandronate or any bisphosphonate medications. Boniva may not be a good choice for you if you have severe kidney disease, low blood levels of calcium, or problems with your esophagus. Do not take Boniva tablet if you cannot sit upright or stand for at least one full hour. Before you start taking this medication, talk to your doctor about your medical conditions and about all the medications you are currently taking including OTC and herbal medications. It is unknown whether Ibandronate will harm an unborn baby. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant while using this medication. It is unknown whether Ibandronate passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby. Do not use Boniva without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.
