Dosage

The generic Calcort (Deflazacort) is available in the strength of 1 mg, 6 mg, 12 mg, 24 mg, and 30 mg tablets

Usage

Calcort (Deflazacort) is a prescription medication used to treat a wide variety of inflammatory conditions such as autoimmune diseases (systemic lupus erythematosus, sarcoidosis), joint disease (rheumatoid arthritis,) and allergies. The active ingredient in the Calcort tablet is Deflazacort. Deflazacort belongs to the group of medicine called corticosteroids. It works by increasing the level of glucocorticoid in the body, decreasing the formation of substances that cause inflammation, and suppressing immunity to stop self-damaging to the body by the immune system. While this medication does not cure the disease, it can help slow the disease progression by improving muscle strength.

Side Effects and Precautions

Stop using the medication and get medical care if you have an allergic reaction. Signs of an allergic reaction may include difficulty breathing, hives (rash on your body), swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat—If you experience any of these symptoms, please call 911 or seek emergency medical care at the nearest emergency room (ER).

The common side effects of Calcort are cough, cushingoid appearance, abdominal pain, weight gain, increased appetite, and recurrent upper respiratory tract infection.

Stop using Calcort and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Blurred vision, tunnel vision, eye pain;
• Changes in thyroid function such as heat or cold intolerance;
• Extreme changes in mood and personality;
• Fever, chills, sore throat, or weakness;
• High blood sugar;
• Peeling of the skin;
• Severe or ongoing diarrhea;

• Severe body itching

The above information is a summary and may not contain all the side effect information. If you still have questions about side effects, you should talk to your doctor or pharmacist so they can address all your concerns.

Warnings and Interactions

Deflazacort comes as a tablet and is to be taken by mouth. It is usually taken once a day with or without food. Take Deflazacort at around the same time every day. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take the tablet as directed. Do not take more or less of it or more often than your doctor prescribes it.

It would be best to know that Deflazacort may decrease your ability to fight infection and may prevent you from developing symptoms if you get an infection. Avoid being near people who are sick or have infections. Call your doctor for preventive treatment if you are exposed to chickenpox or measles. These conditions can be serious or even fatal in people using steroid medicine.

Do not stop taking Deflazacort without talking to your doctor. Stopping the drug abruptly may cause symptoms such as loss of stomachache, vomiting, confusion, headache, fever, and joint pain. Your doctor will probably decrease your dose gradually to allow your body to adjust before stopping the drug completely. You should watch out for these side effects if you are gradually reducing your dose and after you stop taking the tablets. If there is no improvement in your symptoms, you should call your doctor immediately.

Before you start using Calcort, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:
• An eye condition called glaucoma;
• Diagnosed with conditions such as hypothyroidism, osteoporosis, and stomach ulcer;
• Liver problems such as hepatitis B infection;
• High blood pressure;
• Heart attack, or if you have any other heart problems;
• Treating infections at the moment, such as tuberculosis (TB)

Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding. If you become pregnant while taking Deflazacort, call your doctor immediately as taking Calcort during early pregnancy can increase the risk of cleft lip and palate in the infant. It would be best if you talked to your doctor before breastfeeding when you are using this medication, it may not be safe for the nursing baby if you are taking this medication. There may be a drug interaction between Calcort and other drugs such as mifepristone, live vaccines, tacrolimus, pimecrolimus, natalizumab, fexinidazole, clarithromycin, clotrimazole, and leflunomide. Not all possible drug interactions are listed here. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about any questions regarding drug interactions that you may have.
