Dosage

The generic Captopril is available in the strength of 12.5 mg, 25 mg, 50 mg, and 100 mg tablets.

Usage

Capoten (Captopril) is a prescription medication used to treat high blood pressure and heart failure. Treating high blood pressure reduces the risk of heart failure, stroke, and kidney failure. Capoten is often used with lifestyle modifications to control blood pressure. These lifestyle changes may include maintaining a healthy weight, exercising, and eating a low-fat and salt diet. Capoten is also used to improve survival after a heart attack and to protect the kidneys from damage due to diabetes in patients with type 1 diabetes and retinopathy (eye disease). The active ingredient in Capoten is Captopril. Captopril belongs to a class of drugs called angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors. It works by decreasing the chemicals that tighten the blood vessels so blood can flow freely, helping the heart pump more blood.

Warnings and Interactions

Before using Capoten, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it or have any other allergies. Capoten is a tablet. Take Capoten exactly as your doctor prescribes. Take the tablets whole with plenty of liquid, preferably a glass of water. Do not crush, chew, or open the tablets. Capoten is usually taken 1 hour before meals. Your dose will depend on the condition you are treating. Drink plenty of water each day while taking this drug to prevent dehydration. This drug may lower your blood pressure and make you feel light-headed. Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how this medicine affects you. Avoid drinking alcohol when using Capoten. Alcohol can further lower your blood pressure and increase the side effects of the drug. Do not stop taking this drug without talking to your doctor, even if you feel better. High blood pressure often has no symptoms. Do not use salt substitutes or potassium supplements while using Capoten unless your doctor tells you to.

Before you start using Capoten, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you:
• Are pregnant or breastfeeding;
• Have diabetes;
• Have had an organ transplant;
• Have had angioedema after taking any ACE inhibitor;
• Have kidney disease;
• Have lupus, arthritis, or other connective tissue diseases;

Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. You should not take this drug during pregnancy. Capoten may cause injury or death to an unborn baby if taken during the second or third trimester. Use effective birth control to prevent pregnancy while taking this drug. Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed. Captopril passes into breast milk and may harm a nursing infant. The use of Capoten should be avoided in children. There may be a drug interaction between Capoten and other drugs such as aliskiren, calcium carbonate, chlorpromazine, metformin, lithium, morphine, tretinoin, etc.
