Product Details

Colestid (Colestipol) is a medication used to treat high cholesterol. Colestid lowers “bad” cholesterol in your blood, also called LDL (low-density lipoproteins) cholesterol. It does this by binding with bile acids in the intestines, which forms a complex that can then be removed through excretion. This increased output of bile acids leads to an increase of receptors in your liver that can reduce LDL cholesterol levels, which in turn lowers the overall level of the bad cholesterol. Lowering your LDL cholesterol may reduce your risk of hardened arteries, which can lead to heart attacks, stroke, and circulation problems.

Side Effects and Precautions

Stop using the medication and get medical care if you have an allergic reaction. Signs of an allergic reaction may include difficulty breathing, hives (rash on your body), swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat—If you experience any of these symptoms, please call 911 or seek emergency medical care at the nearest emergency room (ER).

Common side effects of Colestid include constipation or hemorrhoids. Contact your doctor immediately if you notice more serious side effects such as trouble swallowing, severe constipation or stomach pain, or black, bloody, or tarry stools. If you notice any signs of an allergic reaction, seek emergency medical attention.

The above information is a summary and may not contain all the side effect information. If you still have questions about side effects, you should talk to your doctor or pharmacist so they can address all your concerns.
