Usage

Cortiment ER (Budesonide ER Tablet) is a prescription medication used to treat mild-to-moderate Crohn's disease (an inflammatory bowel disease). The active ingredient in Cortiment ER is Budesonide. Budesonide belongs to the class of drugs called corticosteroids (Gastrointestinal). It works by decreasing inflammation in the intestine and colon of people with inflammatory conditions such as Crohn's disease. It may also be used for other purposes not mentioned in this guide.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Cortiment ER are headache, acne, nausea, dizziness, abdominal pain, and respiratory infection.

Stop using Cortiment ER and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Bruising;
• Fatty pad or hump between your shoulders;
• Pink or purple stretch marks on the skin of your stomach, thighs, breasts, or arms;
• Swelling on the face and back;
• Swelling of the legs or arms;
• Severe headache;
• Severe itching;
• Worsening of intestinal condition

Warnings and Interactions

Before taking this medication, tell your doctor if you are allergic to Budesonide or have any other allergies. The tablet should be taken by mouth with a cup of water. It is usually taken once a day in the morning. Take Budesonide at around the same time every day. Budesonide (Cortiment ER) should be taken at least one hour before a meal. Your doctor will tell you how long to take Budesonide. It would be best to carefully follow the directions on your prescription label and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor.

Avoid eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice while using this medication unless your doctor or pharmacist says you may do so safely. Grapefruit can increase the chance of side effects with this medicine. Cortiment ER may help control your symptoms, but it does not cure them. You should maintain a regular visit to your doctor to ascertain your progress. If your symptoms are controlled, your doctor may decrease your dose of Budesonide. After your symptoms have been controlled for 3 months, your doctor may slowly decrease your dose and then stop treating you with this medication. It is important to tell your doctor how you feel during your treatment.

Before you start using Cortiment ER, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:
• Diabetes mellitus;
• Eye problems such as cataracts, glaucoma);
• Gastrointestinal problems such as diverticulitis, ulcers);
• High blood pressure;
• History of infections such as tuberculosis, herpes;
• Liver problem;
• Mental problems such as psychosis, anxiety, depression);
• Osteoporosis (bone disorder)

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when needed. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. Babies born to mothers who have used corticosteroids for a long time may develop hormonal problems. Tell your doctor right away if you notice symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and stooling that don't stop in your baby. This medication passes into breastmilk. Reach out to your doctor before breastfeeding. There may be a drug interaction between Cortiment ER and other drugs such as lopinavir, mifepristone, and ribociclib.
