Dosage

Desogen is available in the strength of 0.15 mg/0.03 mg/21-day and 0.15 mg/0.03 mg/28-day tablets.

Usage

Desogen (Desogestrel/Ethinyl Estradiol) is a prescription contraceptive pill used to prevent pregnancy from occurring among women of reproductive age. The active ingredient in Desogen is Desogestrel and Ethinyl Estradiol. The two active constituents work similarly to the natural hormones in women. Desogestrel belongs to a class of drugs called progestins. Ethinyl Estradiol belongs to a class of medications called synthetic estrogen. It works by causing changes in the cervical mucus and the uterine lining, making it harder for the sperm to reach the uterus. As a result, it becomes difficult to fertilize released eggs during ovulation. Desogen contraceptive pills prevent pregnancy from occurring but do not work as an emergency pill.

Warnings and Interactions

Desogen is a tablet for a particular number of days and should be taken orally with a cup of water. A tablet should be taken per day. You should use the tablet according to your doctor's prescription. It is often recommended to use additional contraceptive methods (such as condoms) during the first consecutive seven days of using the Desogen pill. You may get pregnant if you miss a dose. You should start the pill on the 1st day of your menstruation or a Sunday immediately following the onset of menses. Do not take more than one pill in a day. You may experience breast pain or tenderness while using the Desogen pill. This is a regular occurrence with Desogen medication. However, if the pain becomes unbearable, discuss it with your doctor. There is 21-day and 28-day Desogen prescription, and you should ask your doctor if there is anything you do not understand about your medication. Desogen does not prevent you from contracting sexually transmitted diseases (such as HIV/AIDs, syphilis, or Hepatitis B or C infections). You should talk to your doctor about contraceptive methods to prevent such diseases. Your menses may not be regular during the first month of using Desogen pills. Discuss with your doctor if you do not menstruate consecutively for at least three months. Inform your doctor if you experience a severe side effect of this medication.

Before you start using Desogen, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have the following:
• Blood clotting disorders such as hemophilia;
• Diabetes mellitus;
• Irregular menstrual flow;
• Kidney problems;
• Liver problems;
• Treating hypertension;
• Thyroid disorder

Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. It is not recommended to use contraceptive pills in pregnancy. Desogen may pose a greater danger to a growing baby. Your doctor will conduct a pregnancy test for you to be sure you are not pregnant before starting you on Desogen pills. You should discuss this with your doctor immediately after discovering you are pregnant. Desogen active constituents pass into human breast milk and may harm an infant. Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed. There may be a drug interaction between Desogen and other drugs such as metformin, doxycycline, cabotegravir, and ombitasvir/paritaprevir/ritonavir & dasabuvir (DSC).
