Fortamet (Metformin) is a prescription medication that is used in patients with type 2 diabetes to improve glycemic control in combination with diet and exercise program to control high blood sugar. It could possibly be used with other medications. It may help prevent kidney damage, blindness, nerve problems, loss of limbs and sexual function problems by controlling high blood pressure. Metformin works by helping to restore your body’s proper response to the insulin that is produced naturally by your body. This medication also decreases the amount of sugar that is made by the liver and absorbed by your intestines.
Fortamet Side Effects
The common side effects may include diarrhea, metallic taste, nausea, upset stomach and weakness. Call your doctor immediately if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Feeling short of breath;
• Fever, chills, body aches and flu symptoms;
Get emergency medical help if you have even mild symptoms of lactic acidosis such as:
• Feeling dizzy or light-headed, tired or weak;
• Muscle pain or weakness;
• Numb or cold feeling in your arms and legs;
• Slow or uneven heart rate;
• Stomach pain, nausea with vomiting;
• Trouble breathing
You should not take Fortamet if you are allergic to Metformin or if you have any other allergies. Before you start taking this medication, tell your doctor if you have liver disease or a history of heart disease. Some patients who take Metformin may be more likely to develop lactic acidosis if they have liver or kidney disease, congestive heart failure or a severe infection. It is unknown whether Metformin passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby. You should not breast-feed while you are using this medication. Fortamet Directions
This medication is usually taken by mouth, once daily with the evening meal, or as directed by your doctor. This medication must be swallowed whole. Do not crush or chew the tablets. Drink plenty of fluids while taking this medication.
