Usage

Gastrovol (Bismuth Subsalicylate) is an over-the-counter medication used to temporarily relieve stomach upset, heartburn, indigestion, and nausea in adults and children above 12 years old. The drug may also be used to relieve diarrhea and diarrhea-induced cramps. Gastrovol may also be used to help firm stool and reduce the number of bowel movements. This drug may also be used with other medications to treat stomach ulcers caused by a certain bacteria known as Helicobacter pylori. The active ingredient in Gastrovol is Bismuth Subsalicylate. Bismuth Subsalicylate belongs to a class of drugs called antidiarrheals. It works by decreasing the flow of fluids and electrolytes into the bowel. The drug also reduces inflammation within the intestine and may kill the microorganisms causing diarrhea.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Gastrovol are darkening of stools or tongue and constipation.

Stop using Gastrovol and contact your doctor immediately if you have any of the following serious side effects such as:
• Fast heartbeat;
• Hearing loss;
• Persistent diarrhea or vomiting;
• Signs of an allergic reaction, such as wheezing, hives, itching, breathing difficulties, swelling of the face, lips, or throat;
• Unusual decreased urination;
• Unusual dry mouth

Warnings and Interactions

Before using Bismuth Subsalicylate, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to any ingredient in the drug or have any other allergies. Gastrovol comes as a capsule and should be taken by mouth (orally) as directed by your doctor. Swallow the capsules whole with water. Do not crush or chew. Your dosage will be based on age, medical condition, and response to treatment. Do not increase your dose or take this drug more often than is recommended by your doctor. Inform your doctor if you still have diarrhea 2 days after using the medicine. Drink plenty of water or other beverages to replace the fluids you may have lost while having diarrhea. Avoid using this drug in children or teenagers with flu symptoms or chickenpox. It can cause a fatal condition called Reye’s syndrome.

Before you start using Gastrovol, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you:
• Become pregnant or nursing a child;
• Have bleeding problems;

Inform your doctor about all your medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. The use of Gastrovol should be avoided in pregnancy from 20 weeks until delivery. This medication may harm an unborn baby and cause problems with normal labor/delivery. If your doctor decides you need this medication between 20 and 30 weeks of pregnancy, you should use the lowest effective dose for the shortest possible time. Do not use this medication after 30 weeks of pregnancy. Do not breastfeed when using Bismuth Subsalicylate. It is unknown if this medicine passes into breast milk or if it may harm a nursing infant. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding. Do not take Gastrovol within 2 hours of tetracycline antibiotics, as it can reduce the drug’s effectiveness.
