Usage

Glycerin suppositories (Glycerin) is an over-the-counter medication used to relieve occasional constipation. Constipation is a condition where a person has uncomfortable or infrequent bowel movements. For adults, the normal frequency of bowel movements varies from once daily to 1 to 2 times weekly. For children, the normal frequency of bowel movements varies from once daily to once every other day. The active ingredient in Glycerin suppositories is Glycerin. Glycerin belongs to the class of medication called hyperosmotic laxatives. It works by drawing water into the intestines to cause a bowel movement within 15 to 60 minutes.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Glycerin suppositories are abdominal pain, rectal irritation, and small amounts of mucus in stool.

Stop using Glycerin suppositories and contact your doctor immediately if you have any of the following serious side effects such as:
• Bloody stools;
• Persistent diarrhea;
• Rectal bleeding;
• Signs of an allergic reaction, such as rash, breathing difficulties, swelling of the face, mouth, tongue, or throat;

Warnings and Interactions

Before using Glycerin, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to any ingredient in the drug or have any other allergies. Glycerin is a suppository, and it should be inserted rectally (through the anus) as directed by your doctor. Please do not take it by mouth. Wash your hands before and after using the product. If the medication is wrapped in foil, remove the foil wrapper before inserting it. You can moisten the suppository with lukewarm water. Do not use mineral oil or petroleum jelly. They can make the suppository less effective. If the suppository is too soft to insert, chill it in the refrigerator for 30 minutes or run cold water over it before removing the foil wrapper. Lie on your left side with the right knee slightly bent. Using your finger, gently insert the suppository well up into the rectum, pointed end first. After insertion, stay in position for 15 to 20 minutes, if possible, until you feel a strong urge to have a bowel movement. Do not use Glycerin suppositories too often. It may cause a loss of normal bowel function and lead to an inability to have a bowel movement without using the drug. Do not use other laxatives in combination with Glycerin rectal unless your doctor tells you to. Constipation is best treated by drinking plenty of fluids, eating high-fibre foods, and exercising regularly.

Before you start using Glycerin suppositories, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you:
• Become pregnant or nursing a child;
• Have bowel problems such as haemorrhoids, ulcerative colitis, etc.
• Have had a change in bowel habits that has lasted two weeks or longer;
• Have intestinal blockage;
• Have rectal bleeding;
• Have used another laxative for longer than one week

Inform your doctor about all your medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. This drug should only be used in pregnancy if the benefits outweigh the risks. It is unknown if Glycerin passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding. There may be a drug interaction between Glycerin and other drugs, such as ondansetron and sertraline.
