Usage

Hepsera (Adefovir dipivoxil) is a prescription medication used to treat hepatitis B in adults and children at least 12 years old. This condition is a chronic viral infection of the liver. Chronic hepatitis B infection lingers when the immune system cannot fight off the infection. The active substance in Hepsera is Adefovir dipivoxil. Adefovir dipivoxil belongs to a class of medication called nucleotide analogs. It works by decreasing the amount of hepatitis B virus in the body. Treating hepatitis prevents further worsening of the liver, and subsequent liver failure.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Hepsera are stomach pain, weakness, headache, and nausea.

Stop using Hepsera and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Irregular heart rate;
• Signs of an allergic reaction such as breathing difficulties, hives, swelling of the face, lips, or throat;
• Unusual muscle pain

Warnings and Interactions

Before using adefovir dipivoxil, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it or have any other allergies. Hepsera comes as a tablet that should be swallowed whole. Take this drug once daily with or without food. Take this drug at the same time each day to help you remember. You may need frequent liver function tests while using this medicine and for several months after your last dose. Using Hepsera will not prevent your disease from spreading. Do not have unprotected sex or share razors or toothbrushes.

Before you start using Hepsera, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:
• A liver transplant;
• HIV;
• Kidney disease

Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. It is not known if Hepsera will harm the unborn baby. Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. It is unknown if Hepsera passes into breast milk. The use of Hepsera should be avoided in children less than 12 years old. There may be a drug interaction between Hepsera and other drugs, such as entecavir, cobicistat, telbivudine, and tenofovir.
