Usage

K-Dur (Potassium Chloride) is an prescription medication used to treat and prevent low blood levels of potassium (hypokalemia). Potassium Chloride is a mineral found in many foods and is needed for several bodily functions, including regulating the heart beats. Potassium helps your cells, kidneys, heart, muscles, and nerves to work properly. Most of the people are able to get enough potassium by eating a well-balanced diet. However, hormonal imbalance, severe diarrhea and vomiting over a prolonged period of time can lower the serum potassium levels. In addition to certain medical conditions, diuretics (water pills) can also lower serum potassium levels.

Side Effects and Precautions

Stop using the medication and get medical care if you have an allergic reaction. Signs of an allergic reaction may include difficulty breathing, hives (rash on your body), swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat—If you experience any of these symptoms, please call 911 or seek emergency medical care at the nearest emergency room (ER).

The common side effects of K-Dur include diarrhea, gas, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, the appearance of a K-Dur tablet in your stool, and vomiting. Stop using K-Dur and call your doctor right away if you have:
High levels of potassium;
• Nausea, tingly feelings, tingly feeling, generalized weakness;
• Severe throat irritation;
• Severe stomach pain or vomiting, stomach bloating;
• Signs of stomach bleeding, tarry or bloody stools, coughing up blood;

Warnings and Interactions

You should not use K-Dur if you are allergic to Potassium Chloride or if you:
• Have high levels of potassium in your blood;
• Take a potassium sparing diuretic pill such as amiloride, spironolactone, or triamterene

Before you start using this medication, talk to your doctor about your medical history especially if you have ever had:
• A large tissue injury such as a severe burn;
• An adrenal gland disorder;
• Blockage in your stomach or intestines;
• Chronic diarrhea;
• Cirrhosis or other liver disease;
• Heart disease or high blood pressure;
• Kidney disease;
• Severe dehydration;
• Stomach or intestinal bleeding

Do not use potassium supplements or other potassium products unless advised by your doctor. Take this medication with food or just after a meal. Tell your doctor about all the medications you use including prescription, OTC, herbal products and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction with other medications such as a diuretic, or a heart or blood pressure medication. Consult your doctor if you are pregnant or breast-feeding.
