Usage

Kapvay (Clonidine HCl Extended-Release) is a prescription medication used to treat attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children ages 6-12, adolescents, and adults. ADHD is a condition in which the affected child seems restless, may have trouble concentrating, and may act on impulse. Clonidine may also be used alone or with other medications to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). The active ingredient in Kapvay is Clonidine HCl. Clonidine HCl belongs to the class of drugs called central-acting Alpha2 Agonists (ADHD Agents). How Kapvay treats ADHD is unknown; however, it is thought to work by affecting the pre-frontal cortex of the brain, reducing symptoms and behavioral problems in patients with ADHD. It is also believed to regulate attention issues and help with controlling impulses.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Kapvay are sedation, tiredness, cough, sneezing, irritability, sore throat, change in mood, constipation, dry mouth, and ear pain.

Stop using Kapvay and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the severe side effects such as:
• Shortness of breath or fainting while taking this medication;
• Severe chest pain;
• Sleepiness or withdrawal symptoms

Warnings and Interactions

Before using clonidine, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it or if you have any other allergies. Kapvay is a tablet, and it should be taken orally with or without food and as directed by your doctor, usually twice daily (in the morning and at bedtime). If the doses are not equal, take the larger dose at bedtime. Each dose can last up to 24 hours. Do not use more than your prescribed dose. To reduce your risk of side effects, your doctor may direct you to start this medication at a low dose and gradually increase your dose. Swallow the tablets whole. Do not crush or chew the tablets. Doing so can release all of the drug at once, increasing the risk of side effects. Do not drink alcohol while taking this drug. Taking Kapvay medicine may impair your or your teenager's ability to drive, operate machinery, or perform other potentially dangerous tasks. If side effects are bothersome or do not go away, talk to your doctor. Most people taking this medication do not experience any of these side effects.

Before you start using Kapvay, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:
• Heart rhythm problems such as slow/irregular heartbeat, second- or third-degree atrioventricular block;
• Kidney problems;
• Liver problems

Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when needed. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. This drug passes into breast milk and may have undesirable effects on a nursing infant. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding. There may be a drug interaction between Kapvay and other drugs such as alcohol, barbiturates, antihistamines, or other sedatives.
