Drug name: Loestrin
Generic name: Ethinyl Estradiol and Norethisterone
Use: Birth control.
Loestrin birth control pill is used to prevent pregnancy in women. Ethinyl Estradiol and Levonorgestrel are both types of female hormone that prevent ovulation from happening. Loestrin works in various way to avoid pregnancy including preventing ovulation, thickening the cervical mucus to stop sperm from reaching the uterus and also thinning the lining of the uterus to avoid an egg attaching to it. Loestrin is a 21 day pill pack, and the pills are taken for three weeks followed by a one week break. It is advised that for the best protection if birth control pills are used in conjunction with other methods of contraception. We currently have brand Galen Loestrin (1 mg/20 mcg/21 day, 1.5 mg/30mcg/21 day) available in stock.
Loestrin Side Effects
The possible Loestrin side effects include:
• Bloating, stomach pain, mild nausea, vomiting, weight gain;
• Breast pain, breast tenderness;
• Darkening of the facial skin, loss of scalp hair, increased hair growth and changes in menstrual periods;
• Loss of interest in sex;
• Swelling of the hands or feet, problems with contact lenses;
• Swelling, mild headache, fatigue, irritability;
More serious side effects may include:
• Bloating, chest pain, general ill feeling;
• Change in pattern or severity of migraines;
• Confusion, pain behind the eyes, problems with speech or balance;
• Jaundice or depression;
• Sudden numbness or weakness;
Loestrin Safety in Pregnancy and Children
Before purchasing, tell your doctor if you have any of the following medical conditions:
• A history of a stroke, blood clot, or circulation problems;
• A hormone-related cancer such as breast or uterine cancer;
• Abnormal vaginal bleeding;
• An abnormal mammogram;
• High blood pressure or a history of heart disease;
• High cholesterol, gallbladder disease, or diabetes;
• Liver disease, liver cancer, or a history of jaundice caused by birth control pills;
• Migraine headaches or a history of depression.
Loestrin is in pregnancy category X (studies have shown fetal abnormalities). You should not take Loestrin if you are pregnant or breastfeeding as it is designed to prevent pregnancy. Loestrin is not approved for use in children under 14 years of age. Loestrin is for women only and should not be used by men.
