Usage

NexGard (Afoxolaner) is a prescription medication used to prevent and protect dogs against dangerous flea and tick infestations all month long. Without proper treatment, flea and tick infestations can cause significant discomfort and health issues for pets and humans. The active ingredient in NexGard is Afoxolaner. Afoxolaner belongs to a class of drugs called isoxazoline insecticides. It works by disrupting the nervous system of fleas and ticks, leading to their paralysis and eventually death.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of NexGard are vomiting, diarrhea, appetite loss, hyperactivity, and lethargy.

Stop administering NexGard and contact your veterinarian immediately if your dog has any of the following serious side effects such as:
• Signs of an allergic reaction, such as facial swelling, hives, scratching, vomiting, shock, seizures

Warnings and Interactions

Before administering Afoxolaner, tell your veterinarian if your dog is allergic to any ingredient in the drug or has any other allergies. NexGard comes as a chewable tablet that should be taken by mouth (orally) as directed by your veterinarian. You can give your dog this medicine with or without food. Treatment with NexGard may begin at any time of the year. Monthly treatment should continue the entire year without interruption in areas where fleas are common year-round. To minimize the likelihood of flea re-infestation, treating all animals within the household with an approved flea product is essential. This medicine is for use in dogs only. Please do not take it. NexGard should be administered only in Dogs 8 weeks of age and older and with at least 4 lbs of weight.

Before you start giving NexGard, inform your veterinarian about your dog's medical history, especially if it:
• Has a history of seizures;
• Is lactating;
• Is pregnant or breeding

Inform your veterinarian about all your pet's medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your veterinarian if your dog is pregnant or breeding. It is unknown whether NexGard is safe for pregnant or breeding dogs. Do not give this drug to breastfeeding dogs. It is unknown if Afoxolaner passes into breast milk or if it may harm nursing puppies. There may be a drug interaction between NexGard and other drugs.
