Dosage

Nucala is available in the strength of 100 mg/ml powder vial for solution.

Usage

Nucala (Mepolizumab) is a prescription medication used to treat adults and children (age six and older) with severe eosinophilic asthma. Nucala powder for injection is also used with other medicines to treat nasal polyps and chronic rhinosinusitis. The active substance in Nucala is Mepolizumab. Mepolizumab belongs to the class of medication called Interleukin Inhibitors; Monoclonal Antibodies (Anti-asthmatics). It reduces the level of eosinophils by preventing the binding of IL-5 to eosinophils. This reduces blood, tissue, and sputum eosinophil levels. It would be best to know that Nucala should not be used to treat sudden breathing problems. Talk to your doctor for a quick relief inhaler or medication.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Nucala are headache, pain, redness, swelling, itching, a burning feeling at the injection site, back pain, and tiredness.

Stop using Nucala and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Burning or tingling anywhere in your body;
• Symptoms of an allergic reaction include swelling of your face, mouth, and tongue, breathing problems, fainting, dizziness, feeling lightheaded;
• Unusual pain or tiredness

Warnings and Interactions

Before you start using Nucala injection, you should inform your doctor if you are allergic to Mepolizumab or any of the ingredients in Nucala. In addition, tell your doctor if you are taking oral or inhaled corticosteroid medicines. Do not stop taking your other asthma medicines, including your corticosteroid medicines, unless instructed by your doctor or pharmacist because this may cause other symptoms to come back. Nucala comes as a powder for injection. It is reconstituted with a diluent and injected under the skin, usually once every four weeks. Your doctor may teach you how to use the injection at home properly. You should ask your doctor if you do not understand something. Seek medical attention if your breathing problems get worse or if you think your asthma medications are not working as expected.

Before you start using Nucala, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have the following:
• Herpes zoster infection;
• History of parasite infection (such as roundworms or tapeworms);
• kidney problems;
• Liver problems

Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Mepolizumab may harm your child, especially during the second trimester. Your doctor will discuss the benefits and potential risks of being given this medicine during pregnancy. In addition, it is unknown whether the active ingredients of Nucala can pass into breast milk. Again, your doctor can discuss with you the risks and benefits involved. Mepolizumab has no listed severe interactions with other drugs; however, you should check with your doctor to prevent polypharmacy (use of multiple medications).
