Usage

Optimyxin (Gramicidin/Polymyxin B Sulfate) is an over-the-counter medication used to treat external ear and eye bacterial infections. External eye infections include blepharitis, conjunctivitis, and keratitis. Ear infections include swimmer ears with symptoms such as ear pain, hearing loss, and ear canal swelling. The active ingredients in Optimyxin are Gramicidin and Polymyxin B Sulfate. Gramicidin and Polymyxin B Sulfate belong to a class of drugs called antibiotics. They work by killing the bacteria causing the infection.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Optimyxin are blurred vision, temporary hearing loss, and irritation at the application site.

Stop using Optimyxin and contact your doctor immediately if you have any of the following serious side effects such as:
• Impaired vision;
• Severe ear pain;
• Severe eye pain;
• Signs of an allergic reaction such as rash, breathing difficulties, swelling, and itching of the face, tongue, or throat

Warnings and Interactions

Before using Gramicidin/Polymyxin B Sulfate, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to any ingredient in the drug or have any other allergies. Optimyxin is an ear drop and eye drop. Please do not take it by mouth. The ear drop should only be used for ear infections, while the eye drop should only be used for eye infections. Wash your hands before and after administering Optimyxin. When using this medicine, instill one or two drops in the affected eye or ear two to four times daily for 7 to 10 days. You should see an improvement in your symptoms within 1 to 2 days. Do not stop using this medication even if your symptoms improve. Stopping the drug suddenly may make the infection return, which may be resistant to medication. If there is no improvement in your symptoms within two days, inform your doctor. Do not let the applicator touch your fingers, eye, or ear to prevent contamination. Optimyxin may temporarily blur your vision. Do not drive or operate machinery until you can see clearly.

Before you start using Optimyxin, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you:
• Become pregnant or nursing a child;
• Have fever;
• Have glaucoma;
• Have hearing loss

Inform your doctor about all your medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. It is not known if this drug will harm an unborn baby. Optimyxin should only be used during pregnancy if the benefits outweigh the risks. It is unknown if Gramicidin or Polymyxin B Sulfate passes into breast milk or if they may harm a nursing infant. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding. There may be a drug interaction between Optimyxin and other drugs.
