Product Details

Ovestin (Estriol) is an estrogen cream used to relive symptoms of vaginal dryness, itching, or irritation associated with menopause.

Common side effects may include irritation, itching, increased vaginal discharge, gall bladder problems, skin issues, swollen, tender, or painful breasts, headaches, feeling sick, and flu-like symptoms.

The serious side effects may include:

• High blood pressure
• Jaundice
• Migraine headaches
• Signs of allergic reaction:
o Difficulty breathing
o Hives
o Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat
• Signs of blood clot

You should not use Ovestin if you are allergic to Estriol.

Before you start taking this medication, talk to your doctor about your medical history and about all the medications you take including OTC and herbal medications.

Do not use this medication if you are nursing or pregnant. Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant, thinking about becoming pregnant, or nursing.

Precautions

Follow your doctor’s advice and follow all medication guidelines for your medication. Use it exactly as prescribed.

This medication comes in a pack with a clear plastic applicator. Apply the cream to the vagina right before going to bed. Insert applicator into vagina like you would a tampon and squeeze the medication out.

Keep unused Ovestin out of the reach of children. Store at room temperature away from extreme heat, light, or moisture. Do not allow the medication to freeze.

There may be an interaction between Ovestin and other medications, including other vaginal medications. Talk to your doctor before you use other medications while on Ovestin.

To ensure this medication is right for you, be sure to tell your doctor if any of the following conditions apply to you:

• Abnormal vaginal bleeding
• Angina pectoris, heart attack, or stroke
• Benign breast lumps
• Blod clots
• Breast cancer (or any immediate family members)
• Cancer of the uterine lining
• Diabetes
• Deep vein thrombosis
• Endometriosis
• Fibroids in your womb
• Gallstones
• High blood pressure
• Migraines
• Overgrowth of your uterine lining

1. How long can I use Ovestin?
Answer: You can continue to use this cream for as long as you need to in order to relieve your symptoms but check in with your doctor at least once a year to discuss how things are changing.

2. I can’t take HRT tablets. Can I still use Ovestin?
Answer: Yes, Ovestin is safe for women who can’t or don’t want to take HRT tablets or use HRT patches.

3. Is it safe to have sex while on Ovestin?
Answer: Yes, but keep in mind the cream can damage condoms and diaphragms. This could lead to unwanted pregnancy. Be sure to use backup methods of protection to avoid pregnancy while on this medication and keep in mind it will not protect you against STIs.
