Usage

Pamelor (Nortriptyline Hydrochloride) is a prescription medicine used to treat symptoms of depression, such as decreased mood. The active ingredient in Pamelor is Nortriptyline Hydrochloride. Nortriptyline Hydrochloride belongs to a class of medications called Tricyclic antidepressants. It works by increasing serotonin in the brain. This helps to improve your mood. This medication may be used for other purposes not mentioned in this guide.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Pamelor are constipation, feeling dizzy, dry mouth, feeling sleepy, difficulty peeing, and headaches. They're usually mild and go away after a couple of weeks.

Stop using Pamelor and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Eye pain or swelling;
• Loss of coordination;
• Mood changes;
• New or worsening chest pain;
• Painful or difficult urination;
• Pounding heartbeats;
• Restless muscle movements in your eyes, tongue, jaw, or neck;
• Seizure;
• Sleep disturbances such as nightmares or insomnia (trouble sleeping);
• Slurred speech or difficulty speaking;
• Sudden numbness or weakness;
• Thoughts of hurting yourself;
• Unusual bleeding

Warnings and Interactions

Before taking Pamelor (Nortriptyline), tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it and other tricyclic antidepressants such as desipramine, clomipramine, imipramine, trimipramine, any other medications, or any of the ingredients in Nortriptyline capsules or liquid. Your doctor will probably start you on a low dose of Pamelor capsule and gradually increase your dose. Continue to take Nortriptyline even if you feel well. Do not stop taking Nortriptyline without talking to your doctor. If you suddenly stop taking Nortriptyline, you may experience withdrawal symptoms such as headache, nausea, and weakness. Your doctor will probably want to decrease your dose gradually.

Nortriptyline can make you feel sleepy, so it's best to take it in the evening or before you go to bed. It would be best to use this medicine according to your doctor's prescription. If your doctor decides to take you off Nortriptyline, your dose will be reduced gradually to help prevent withdrawal side effects such as muscle pain or feeling sick or tired. This drug may make you dizzy or drowsy or blur your vision. Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs alertness or clear vision until you safely do it. You should limit your alcoholic beverages while taking the Pamelor capsule.

Before you start using Pamelor, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:
• A genetic heart condition called Brugada syndrome;
• A seizure;
• A heart problem;
• A thyroid disorder;
• Epilepsy or are having electroconvulsive treatment(ECT);
• Have glaucoma;
• Kidney problems;
• Liver diseases;
• Taking other medication for depression;
• Thoughts about harming yourself or ending your life;
• Type 1 or type 2 diabetes

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. It would be best to speak to your doctor if you become pregnant while taking Nortriptyline. You may be advised to continue taking Nortriptyline during pregnancy, especially if you take it to treat depression. Do not stop taking your medicine unless your doctor tells you to. Your doctor can explain the risks and benefits of taking Nortriptyline and will help you choose the best treatment for you and your baby. This medication passes into breast milk and may negatively affect a nursing infant. If you notice that your baby is not feeding as well as usual, or seems unusually sleepy, or if you have any other concerns about your baby, then talk to your doctor immediately. There may be a drug interaction between Pamelor and other drugs such as disopyramide, Ibutilide, indapamide, isocarboxazid, pentamidine, procainamide, quinidine, selegiline, thioridazine, and tranylcypromine.
