Usage

Parlodel (Bromocriptine) is a prescription medication used alone or with levodopa to treat people with Parkinson's disease. Parlodel improves the ability to move and decreases shakiness, stiffness, slowed movement, and instability. Bromocriptine is also used to treat a hormonal imbalance in which there is too much prolactin in the blood (hyperprolactinemia) and acromegaly. The active ingredient in Parlodel is Bromocriptine. Bromocriptine belongs to the class of medication called dopamine agonists. It works by acting like a certain natural substance (dopamine) in the brain. It also prevents the release of certain hormones, such as growth and prolactin. As a result, it lowers these hormone levels but does not cure the causes of the increased levels.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Parlodel are abdominal pain, dizziness, drowsiness, light-headedness, tiredness, nausea and vomiting.

Stop using Parlodel and contact your doctor immediately if you have any of the following serious side effects such as:
• Dizziness due to sudden drop in blood pressure;
• Headache that doesn’t go away;
• Severe abdominal pain;
• Sudden change in mood and behavior such as hallucination, confusion, and agitation;
• Seizure;
• Worsening of symptoms;

Warnings and Interactions

Parlodel is a table, and it should be taken orally (by mouth) with food as directed by your doctor, usually 1 or 2 times daily. Before you start using Parlodel, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you:
• Become pregnant or nursing a child;
• Have a tumor of the pituitary gland;
• Have hypertension caused by pregnancy (including eclampsia and preeclampsia);
• Have kidney disease;
• Have liver cancer;
• Have stroke or seizure disorder;
• Have uncontrolled high blood pressure (hypertension)

Inform your doctor about all your medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. High blood pressure (eclampsia) can occur during pregnancy, and Bromocriptine could be dangerous if taken by a pregnant woman with high blood pressure. Bromocriptine may affect breast milk production. It would be best to know that breastfeeding is not recommended while using this drug. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding. There may be a drug interaction between Bromocriptine and other drugs such as Almotriptan, zolmitriptan, nitroglycerin, sumatriptan, and lopinavir.
