Usage

Prilosec OTC (Omeprazole) is an over-the-counter medication used to treat excess stomach acid in conditions such as non-cancerous stomach ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), active duodenal ulcer, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and erosive esophagitis. This drug may also be used with antibiotics to treat gastric ulcers caused by infection with Helicobacter pylori. Prilosec OTC is also used in adults to control heartburn that occurs 2 or more days per week. The active ingredient in Prilosec OTC is Omeprazole. Omeprazole belongs to a class of drugs called proton pump inhibitors. It works by decreasing the amount of acid produced in the stomach.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Prilosec OTC are headache, fever, stomach pain, nausea, and cold symptoms, such as stuffy nose, sneezing, and sore throat.

Stop using Prilosec OTC and contact your doctor immediately if you have any of the following serious side effects such as:
• New or unusual pain in your wrist, thigh, or back;
• Severe stomach pain;
• Signs of low magnesium, such as irregular heartbeats, feeling jittery, muscle cramps, and cough;
• Signs of an allergic reaction, such as wheezing, hives, itching, breathing difficulties, swelling of the face, lips, or throat;
• Urinating less than usual

Warnings and Interactions

Use this medicine for the full prescribed length of time, even if your symptoms quickly improve. Take Prilosec OTC for only 14 days in a row. It may take 1 to 4 days for your symptoms to improve. Allow at least 4 months to pass before you start a new 14-day course of treatment. Taking this medicine long-term may increase your risk of having a broken bone. Call your doctor if your symptoms do not improve or if they get worse. Prilosec is not to be used for the immediate relief of heartburn symptoms.

Before you start using Prilosec OTC, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you:
• Become pregnant or nursing a child;
• Have bloody or black stools;
• Have breathing problems;
• Have frequent chest pain;
• Have heartburn that has lasted over 3 months;
• Have kidney problems;
• Have liver disease;
• Have low levels of magnesium in your blood;
• Have osteoporosis;
• Have unexplained weight loss

Inform your doctor about all your medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. It is unknown if Prilosec OTC will harm your unborn baby. Discuss the benefits and risks of using this drug in pregnancy with your doctor. Do not breastfeed when using Omeprazole. This medicine passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding. There may be a drug interaction between Prilosec OTC and other drugs, such as digoxin, clopidogrel, St. John’s wort, amoxicillin, methotrexate, etc.
