Usage

Proin (Phenylpropanolamine Hydrochloride) is a prescription medication used to treat urinary incontinence due to poor muscle tone in the urethral sphincter in dogs. The drug is not effective in dogs with incontinence due to neurologic disease or malformations. Proin is also used in an extra-label capacity to treat urinary incontinence in cats. The term off-or extra-label use means that a medication can be used in a way or in a particular species not specified on the medication label. Off-or extra-label use of a medication can only be prescribed by a veterinarian who has direct and personal knowledge of your pet and when there are no other appropriate medications for a particular pet's circumstances. The active ingredient in Proin is Phenylpropanolamine Hydrochloride. Phenylpropanolamine Hydrochloride belongs to a class of drugs called sympathomimetic amines. It works by increasing sphincter tone in the urethra to reduce incontinence.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Proin are increased thirst, vomiting, weight loss, panting, and lethargy.

Stop administering Proin and contact your veterinarian immediately if your dog has any of the following serious side effects such as:
• Abnormal heart rhythm;
• Irritability;
• Musculoskeletal disorder;
• Restlessness

Warnings and Interactions

Before using Phenylpropanolamine Hydrochloride, tell your veterinarian or veterinarian if you are allergic to any ingredient in the drug or have any other allergies. Proin comes as a chewable tablet and should be taken by mouth (orally) as directed by your veterinarian. You can give this drug to your dog with or without food. • Has kidney disease;

• Is lactating;

Inform your veterinarian about all your medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your veterinarian if your dog is pregnant or breeding. It is unknown whether Proin is safe for pregnant or breeding dogs. Inform your veterinarian if your dog is lactating. The safety of this drug in nursing pets has not been studied. There may be a drug interaction between Proin and other drugs, such as reserpine, aspirin, isoflurane, etc.
