Usage

Relafen (Nabumetone) is a prescription medication used to treat pain and inflammation caused by osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease in which the tissues in the joint break down over time. It is the most common type of arthritis and is more common in older people. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disease that causes inflammation and joint damage. The active ingredient in Relafen is Nabumetone. Nabumetone belongs to a class of drugs called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). It works by reducing hormones that cause inflammation and pain in the body.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Relafen are diarrhea, dizziness, gas, headache, and upset stomach.

Stop using Relafen and contact your doctor immediately if you have any of the following serious side effects such as:
• Black stools;
• Severe headache;
• Signs of an allergic reaction, such as wheezing, hives, itching, breathing difficulties, swelling of the face, lips, or throat;
• Unusual tiredness;
• Unusual weight gain

Warnings and Interactions

Before using Nabumetone, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to any ingredient in the drug or have any other allergies. Relafen is a tablet and should be taken orally (by mouth) as directed by your doctor. Swallow the tablet whole. Do not crush the drug. You can take this drug with or without food. Do not lie down for at least 10 minutes after taking Relafen. This drug can make you dehydrated. Drink plenty of fluids, especially when exercising or in hot weather, to reduce your risk of dehydration. Relafen can increase your sensitivity to the sun and make you sunburn easily. Avoid exposure to sunlight or tanning beds. Wear protective clothing and use sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) outdoors. This drug may make you dizzy. Avoid driving or using machines until it is safe to do so. Avoid drinking alcohol and smoking. It may increase your risk of stomach bleeding. Your doctor may occasionally change your dose to ensure you get the best results. You may need frequent medical tests if you take this medicine long-term. Long-term use of Relafen can increase your risk of fatal heart attack or stroke.

Before you start using Relafen, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you:
• Are about to have or have had a heart bypass surgery;
• Become pregnant or nursing a child;
• Have a history of blood clots;
• Have asthma;
• Have ever had a stroke;
• Have fluid retention;
• Have high blood pressure;
• Have high cholesterol;
• Have kidney disease;
• Have liver disease;
• Have stomach ulcer or bleeding

Inform your doctor about all your medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Taking Relafen in the last 20 weeks of pregnancy can cause serious kidney or heart problems in the fetus and possible complications with your pregnancy. Discuss the benefits and risks of using this drug in pregnancy with your doctor. Do not breastfeed when using Nabumetone. It is unknown if this medicine passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding. There may be a drug interaction between Relafen and other drugs, such as prednisone, warfarin, methotrexate, diuretics, aspirin, etc.
