Usage

Reminyl (Galantamine) is a prescription medication used to treat mild to moderate dementia related to Alzheimer's disease. Alzheimer's is a disease that causes the brain to shrink till brain cells eventually die. This disease presents with symptoms such as agitation, trouble sleeping, and hallucinations. The symptoms of Alzheimer's disease are thought to be due to a lack of acetylcholine. This substance transmits messages between brain cells. The active ingredient in Reminyl is Galantamine. Galantamine belongs to a class of drugs called acetylcholinesterase inhibitors. It works by preventing the breakdown of acetylcholine, allowing more acetylcholine to build up in the brain.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Reminyl are dizziness, headache, diarrhea, weight loss, and appetite loss.

Stop using Reminyl and contact your doctor immediately if you have any of the following serious side effects such as:
• Black, tarry, or bloody stools;
• Difficulty passing urine;
• Signs of an allergic reaction, such as rash, hives, wheezing, breathing difficulties, swelling of the face, lips, or throat;
• Slow heartbeat

Warnings and Interactions

• Have problems controlling body movements;
• Have stomach ulcers

Inform your doctor about all your medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. It is unknown if Reminyl will harm your unborn baby. Do not breastfeed when using Galantamine. It is unknown if this drug passes into breast milk or if it may harm a nursing infant. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding. There may be a drug interaction between Reminyl and other drugs, such as bethanecol, digoxin, ketoconazole, erythromycin, fluoxetine, etc.
