Salazopyrin Information

Salazopyrin Details (Brand and Generic)

CanadaPharmacyOnline.com currently offers the brand Salazopyrin from Canada, manufactured by Pfizer. The generic Sulfasalazine comes from Canada by a different manufacturer. Our customers may also purchase other medications for Disorders of the Digestive Tract (IBS, Crohn's Disease, Stomach) such as Creon and Motilium.

Dosage

The brand Salazopyrin and its generic Sulfasalazine are available in the strength of 500 mg tablets.

Usage

Salazopyrin (Sulfasalazine) is a prescription medicine used to treat inflammatory bowel diseases such as ulcerative colitis, proctitis, and Crohn's disease. It is also used in treating adults and children in patients who cannot tolerate other medicines (e.g., salicylates or NSAIDs) for rheumatoid arthritis. The active ingredient in the Salazopyrin tablet is Sulfasalazine. It belongs to the class of medication called anti-inflammatories (5-Aminosalicylic Acid Derivatives). It works by inhibiting leukotriene synthesis and lipoxygenase. Therefore, it controls symptoms by reducing chronic inflammation in the bowel and joints.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Salazopyrin are diarrhea, body rash, abdominal pain, feeling sick, dizziness and headache.

Stop using Salazopyrin and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Aching joints and muscles;
• Alopecia or hair loss;
• Breathlessness;
• Chest pain;
• Dermatitis;
• Difficulty swallowing;
• Headache (continuing);
• Palpitations;
• Redness and itchiness of the skin;
• Severe pain in the loins or pain on urination;
• Symptoms of allergic reaction such as abdominal cramps, difficulty breathing, nausea and vomiting, or swelling of the face and throat;
• Signs of interstitial lung disease (e.g., shortness of breath or difficulty breathing)

Warnings and Interactions

Tell your doctor if you are allergic to sulfasalazine, sulfapyridine, salicylate pain relievers such as aspirin, diflunisal, magnesium salicylate, sulfa drugs, or the ingredients in Sulfasalazine tablets. Salazopyrin should be taken after meals with a full glass of water. It is crucial to continue taking this medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor. It would be best if you did not stay too long in the sunlight. If this is unavoidable, you should wear protective clothing, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Sulfasalazine may make your skin sensitive to sunlight. This medicine may cause your urine to turn orange-yellow. This effect is harmless and will disappear when the medication is stopped. Sulfasalazine can cause a low sperm count hence affecting fertility in men. If you have been trying to get a woman pregnant for a year or more while on sulfasalazine, you should discuss this with your doctor and see a fertility specialist to rule out other issues. If you are treating rheumatoid arthritis with Salazopyrin, it may take 1-3 months before you notice any improvement in your symptoms. It would be best to continue taking Salazopyrin for as long as your doctor recommends. Inform your doctor if your condition does not improve or if it worsens.

Before you start using Salazopyrin, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:
• A urinary tract obstruction;
• An inherited blood disorder such as Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6-PD) deficiency;
• Blood problems;
• Gastrointestinal intestinal tract obstruction;
• Kidney stones;
• Liver diseases;
• Respiratory disorders such as asthma

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Inform your doctor if you become pregnant or plan to get pregnant while taking this medication. Salazopyrin should be used only when prescribed by your doctor during pregnancy. We always have an open conversation with your doctor during your treatment. This medication may lower your folic acid levels, thereby increasing your baby's risk of spinal cord defects. Check with your doctor to make sure you are taking enough folic acid. Sulfasalazine passes into breast milk and could negatively affect a nursing infant. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding your child. There may be a drug interaction between Salazopyrin and other drugs such as warfarin, metformin, insulin, methotrexate, antacid, digoxin, and aspirin.
