Dosage

Senokot is available in strengths of 8.6 mg and 50 mg/8.6 mg tablets. The generic Sennosides is available in the strength of 12 mg tablet only.

Usage

Senokot (Sennosides) is an over-the-counter medication used to treat occasional constipation and difficulty in passing feces. Constipation is when a person is experiencing abdominal pain as a result of infrequent, irregular, or difficult bowel movements. The active ingredient of Senokot is Sennosides. Sennoside belongs to the class of medication called Stimulant laxatives. It works by irritating the lining of the bowel, which increases bowel movement.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Senokot are diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, electrolyte abnormalities, and excessive bowel movement.

Stop using Senokot and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the severe side effects such as:
• No bowel movement 12 hours after using Senokot;
• Recurrent diarrhea;
• Spontaneous rectal bleeding;
• Signs of a severe allergic reaction (e.g., abdominal cramps, difficulty breathing, nausea and vomiting, or swelling of the face and throat)

Warnings and Interactions

Senokot is a tablet that should be taken orally with a cup of water. Do not use Senokot products for longer than 1 week unless directed by a doctor. You should read the leaflet that comes with it carefully. Use Senokot (Senna) exactly as directed on the label or as your doctor prescribes. Adults and children (above 12 years of age and above) should take 2 tablets once daily. It is recommended to take a Senokot tablet around bedtime. You should feel the effect of this medication within 6-12 hours after ingestion. Do not use Senokot with herbal medicines or supplements that can lower potassium levels. If there is no bowel movement after using senna, or there is rectal bleeding, contact your doctor as soon as possible.

Before you start using Senokot, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:
• Appendicitis;
• Bowel problems or stomach such as intestinal ulcers or perforation;
• Electrolyte imbalance;
• Heart failure;
• Kidney problems;
• Liver problems;
• Undiagnosed rectal bleeding

Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Sennoside is safe to use during pregnancy. However, it should only be used when recommended by a doctor. Lower than usual adult doses should be used during pregnancy. Senokot is safe to be used by nursing mothers if prescribed by your doctor. There may be a drug interaction between Senokot and other drugs, such as deflazacort, dichlorphenamide, and digoxin.
