Usage

Solystat (Sodium Polystyrene Sulfonate) is a prescription medication used for the short-term treatment of high levels of potassium in the blood (hyperkalemia). The active substance in Solystat is Sodium Polystyrene Sulfonate. Sodium Polystyrene Sulfonate belongs to a class of medication called Potassium binders. Excessive potassium in your blood can sometimes cause heart rhythm problems. Sodium polystyrene sulfonate works by helping the body get rid of extra potassium.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Solystat are nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, and constipation.

Stop using Solystat and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Fast and irregular heartbeat;
• Inability to move your body (paralysis);
• Muscle weakness and spasms;
• Severe abdominal pain;
• Serious nausea and vomiting;
• Sudden drop in the potassium level

Warnings and Interactions

Before using sodium polystyrene sulfonate, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it or have any other allergies. Solystat comes as a powder and should be properly mixed with a clean cup of water. Shake the bottle very well before using it. Do not heat this medication because it may not work as well. Drink the preparation by mouth or rectally as directed by your doctor. If you are taking this medication by mouth, take it as directed by your doctor, usually 1 to 4 times daily. Carefully measure the dose using a special measuring device/spoon or use the prescribed number of pre-measured bottles of suspension. Your doctor may request a blood test to check your potassium level. It is advisable not to use more than your prescribed dose. The duration of treatment is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. Do not use it for longer than directed because your potassium blood level may drop too low.

Before you start using Solystat, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:
• Heart problems such as hypertension, abnormal rhythm, and heart failure;
• Intestinal obstruction;
• kidney problems;
• Liver problems

Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Solystat can harm the unborn baby. You should be on an approved contraceptive while taking Solystat to avoid getting pregnant. Inform your healthcare provider if you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. It is not known if Solystat passes into your breast milk. Solystat is effective and safe for children above eight years of age. There may be a drug interaction between Solystat and other drugs, such as meloxicam antacids/laxatives.
