Usage

Venofer (Iron Sucrose Complex) is a prescription medication used to treat low iron levels in the blood of people diagnosed with chronic kidney diseases or end-stage renal disease. The active ingredient in Venofer is Iron sucrose. Iron sucrose belongs to the group of medications called Iron supplements. It works by replenishing iron stores so that the body can make more red blood cells. Iron is an important component of red blood cells and is needed to transport oxygen in the body. Correcting anemia prevents diseases, cellular death, and multiple organ failure.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Venofer are injection site pain, or swelling, headache, dizziness, changes in taste, nausea, and vomiting.

Stop using Venofer and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• An allergic reaction such as swelling of the lips and face;
• A rapid drop in blood pressure;
• Changes in mental function;
• Feeling dizzy or lightheaded;
• Severe headache and poor vision;
• Severe muscle pain;
• Swellings at different parts of the body;
• Vomiting for more than three days

Warnings and Interactions

Before having an iron sucrose injection, tell your doctor if you are allergic to it; or have any other allergies. Venofer is an injection that should be injected directly into the vein by a doctor in a hospital setting. You should follow your doctor's instructions carefully. It is usually given slowly over 2 to 5 minutes or as your doctor directs. Iron sucrose can also be mixed in a saline solution and given through an intravenous fluid infusion over a longer time. Inform your doctor if you feel strange or pass out when administering Venofer injection. Your doctor will determine how often you receive iron sucrose injections and total doses based on your condition and how well you respond to the medication. If your iron levels become low after treatment, your doctor may prescribe this medication again.

Before you start using Venofer, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:
• Heart problems such as treating hypertension or heart failure;
• Hemochromatosis or iron overload (the buildup of excess iron);
• Hereditary disorders such as sickle cell disease, G6PD, and hereditary spherocytosis;
• Kidney problems;
• Liver problems

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Iron sucrose can harm an unborn baby if you react severely to this medicine during your second or third trimester. However, not treating iron deficiency anemia during pregnancy may cause complications such as premature birth or low birth weight. The benefit of treating your condition during pregnancy may outweigh any risks. Discuss with your doctor for alternate medicine that is compatible with pregnancy. Inform your doctor before breastfeeding your child. There may be a drug interaction between Venofer and other drugs such as antacids (aluminum hydroxide), vitamin E medications, cimetidine, and other iron-containing medicine. Store the injection vial in a cool and secure place. Do not use it after the expiry date.
