Usage

Vitamin B2 is an over-the-counter medication used to treat or prevent riboflavin deficiencies. Symptoms of riboflavin deficiency include blurred vision, sore throat, swollen tongue, cracked lips, and scaly patches around the ears, nose, and eyelids. Riboflavin is involved in many body processes. It is necessary to properly develop the skin, lining of the digestive tract, blood cells, and brain function. This vitamin is widely found in plant- and animal-based foods, including milk, meat, eggs, nuts, enriched flour, and green vegetables. Vitamin B2 is also used to treat migraines, acne, muscle cramps, and high levels of homocysteine in the blood. The active ingredient in Vitamin B2 is Riboflavin. Riboflavin belongs to the class of medication called vitamins. It works by increasing riboflavin levels in the body to perform necessary bodily functions.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Vitamin B2 are diarrhea, increased urination, nausea, and yellow-orange urine.

Stop using Vitamin B2 and contact your doctor immediately if you have any of the following serious side effects such as:
• Burning or prickling sensations;
• Increased sensitivity to light;
• Numbness

Warnings and Interactions

Before taking Vitamin B2, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to any ingredient in the drug or have any other allergies. Vitamin B2 is a tablet; it should be taken orally (by mouth) with food as directed by your doctor. Riboflavin is best absorbed when taken between meals. Take the drug at regular intervals to get the most benefit from it. Taking a vitamin supplement does not replace the need for a balanced diet. Some foods that have vitamin B2 are milk, meat, eggs, nuts, enriched flour, and green vegetables.

Before you start using Vitamin B2, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you:
• Become pregnant or nursing a child;
• Have gallbladder disease;
• Have liver disease

Inform your doctor about all your medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Vitamin B2 is considered safe during pregnancy, but your dosage may be different during this time. Do not use Riboflavin in pregnancy without your doctor's advice. Vitamin B2 may be safe to use when breastfeeding. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding. There may be a drug interaction between Vitamin B2 and other drugs such as tetracycline, amitriptyline, Thorazine, doxorubicin, methotrexate, phenytoin, and probenecid.
