Xifaxan (rifaximin) is a prescription medication used to treat travelers' diarrhea caused by non-invasive strains of Escherichia coli, irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D), and hepatic encephalopathy (to reduce the risk of overt hepatic encephalopathy recurrence). Rifaximin is a rifamycin antibiotic with low systemic absorption, which can increase in patients with severe liver disease.
