Usage

Yaz Plus (Drospirenone/Ethinyl Estradiol/Levomefolate Calcium) is a prescription medication used to prevent pregnancy. This drug may also be used to treat moderate acne in women over 14 years old, who have started menstruating, and who also want birth control. Yaz Plus also helps to increase folate in women who use oral contraception. The active ingredients in Yaz Plus are Drospirenone, Ethinyl Estradiol, and Levomefolate Calcium. Drospirenone belongs to a class of drugs called progestins. Ethinyl Estradiol belongs to a class of drugs called estrogens. Levomefolate Calcium belongs to a class of drugs called vitamins. The drug works by preventing ovulation (the release of an egg from an ovary) and by causing changes in the mucus of the cervix (making it difficult for sperm to penetrate the uterus) and in the endometrium (making it difficult for an egg to implant).

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Yaz Plus are acne, headache, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and appetite changes.

Stop using Yaz Plus and contact your doctor immediately if you have any of the following serious side effects such as:

Warnings and Interactions

Yaz Plus is a tablet, and it should be taken orally (by mouth) as directed by your doctor. Swallow the tablet whole with water. Do not crush, chew, or break it. Take one pink hormone-containing tablet daily at the same time of day (e.g., with a meal or at bedtime) for 24 consecutive days, then take one light orange, hormone-free tablet daily for 4 days. When the light orange tablets are finished, start a new package. You will begin a new package on the same day of the week that you started the last one. You may still be menstruating when you start the new package. When you first start using Yaz Plus, it is advisable to use a second method of birth control for the first 7 days of the first cycle of pill use to ensure prevention of pregnancy. Many women have spotting or light bleeding or may feel sick to their stomach during the first 3 months of taking the pill. If you do feel sick, do not stop taking the pill. The problem will usually go away. If it does not go away, check with your doctor or clinic.

Before you start using Yaz Plus, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you:

• Become pregnant or nursing a child;
• Have breast cancer;
• Have coronary artery disease;

You should delay pregnancy until at least one normal spontaneous menstrual cycle has occurred to date the pregnancy. An alternative birth control method should be used during this time. If you do not menstruate for 6 months or more after stopping birth control pills, notify your doctor. Do not breastfeed when using Drospirenone/Ethinyl Estradiol/Levomefolate Calcium. The hormones in this drug pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing infant. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding. There may be a drug interaction between Yaz Plus and other drugs, such as adapalene, amphetamines, anastrozole, carbamazepine, fluvoxamine, warfarin, tretinoin, rifampin, phenytoin, mifepristone, etc.
