Usage

Alecensa is a prescription medicine used to treat people with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) that is caused by an abnormal anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) gene, and that has spread to other parts of your body. It works by slowing or stopping the growth of cancer cells. Alectinib belongs to a class of drugs known as tyrosine kinase inhibitors. It is not known if Alecensa is safe and effective in children. Take Alecensa exactly as your healthcare provider tells you to take it. Take Alecensa with food. Swallow Alecensa capsules whole. Do not open or dissolve the capsule contents. If you miss a dose of Alecensa or if you vomit after taking a dose of Alecensa, do not take the missed dose. Take your next dose at your regular time.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Alecensa may include tiredness; constipation; swelling in your hands, feet, ankles, face and eyelids; muscle pain, tenderness, and weakness (myalgia); anemia. Stop using Alecensa and call your doctor right away if you have the following serious side effects: liver problems (hepatotoxicity): feeling tired, feeling less hungry than usual, yellowing of your skin or the whites of your eyes, dark urine, itchy skin, nausea or vomiting, pain on the right side of your stomach, bleeding or bruising more easily than normal; lung problems: trouble breathing, shortness of breath, cough, or fever; kidney problems: change in the amount or color of your urine or new or worsening swelling in your legs or feet; slow heartbeat (bradycardia); muscle pain, tenderness, and weakness (myalgia). This is not a complete list of side effects. For any unexpected effects while taking Alecensa, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Warnings and Interactions

Avoid spending time in the sunlight during treatment with Alecensa and for 7 days after the final dose of Alecensa. You may burn more easily and get severe sunburns. Use sunscreen and lip balm with a SPF 50 or greater to help protect against sunburn. Do not use Alecensa if you:

• Are allergic to Alecensa or to any other ingredients in Alecensa;
• Are pregnant or are breast-feeding.

Before you start taking this medication, talk to your doctor about your medical history especially if you:

• Are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Alecensa can harm your unborn baby;
• Are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed;
• Have liver problems;
• Have lung or breathing problems;
• Have a slow heartbeat.

Tell your doctor about all the medications you take or plan to take including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, vitamins and dietary supplements before starting Alecensa. Do not start or stop, or change the dosage of any medicines without your doctor's approval.
