Usage

Combivir (Zidovudine/Lamivudine) is a prescription medication used with other HIV medications to control HIV infection. HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) attacks the body's immune system and can lead to AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) if not treated. The active ingredients in Combivir are Zidovudine and Lamivudine. Zidovudine and Lamivudine belong to a class of drugs called nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs). They work by decreasing the amount of HIV in your body so your immune system can work better. They also increase the CD4 cell count in your blood. CD4 cells are a type of white blood cells that help your body fight infection. Combivir is not a cure for HIV infection.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Combivir are nausea, headache, tiredness, diarrhea, sleeping difficulties, and dizziness.

Stop using Combivir and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Persistent muscle weakness;
• Severe headaches;
• Severe tiredness;
• Signs of an infection, such as fever, chills, swollen lymph nodes, or non-healing skin sores;
• Signs of lactic acidosis, such as stomach pain, nausea, drowsiness, rapid breathing, or numbness in limbs;
• Unexplained weight loss

Warnings and Interactions

Before using Combivir, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it or have any other allergies. Combivir is a capsule. Take Combivir exactly as your doctor prescribes. Swallow the tablets with some water. You can take the drug with or without food. If you cannot swallow the tablets whole, you may crush and combine them with a small amount of food or drink and take all the dose immediately. Combivir helps to control your condition. You need to keep taking it every day to stop your illness from getting worse. Do not stop taking this drug without your doctor's advice. Take your tablets regularly, with approximately 12 hours between each tablet. Using Combivir will not prevent you from transmitting the disease through unprotected sex or sharing personal items like toothbrushes or needles. Talk to your doctor about safe ways to prevent HIV transmission during sex. Combivir can make you dizzy. Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how the medicine affects you.

Before you start using Combivir, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you:
• Are pregnant or breastfeeding;
• Have anemia or neutropenia;
• Have hepatitis C;

• Have pancreas disorder

Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. The safety of Combivir in pregnancy has not been established. If you use Combivir in pregnancy, your doctor may request frequent blood tests and other diagnostic tests to monitor your child's development. Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed. Breastfeeding is not recommended in women living with HIV because the infection can be passed to your baby through breast milk. Small amounts of Zidovudine and Lamivudine also pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing infant. Do not give this drug to a child without talking to your doctor. Combivir dosages in children are based on weight.
