Dosage

The brand Digoxin is available in the strength of 0.0625 mg tablets. The generic Lanoxin is also available in the strength of 0.125 mg and 0.25 mg tablets and 0.25 mg/ml vials.

Usage

Digoxin (Lanoxin) is a prescription medication used to treat heart failure. Heart failure occurs when the heart does not pump blood as well as it should. Digoxin is also used to treat atrial fibrillation, a condition that causes irregular heart rhythm. The active ingredient in Digoxin is Lanoxin. Lanoxin belongs to a class of drugs called cardiac glycosides. It works by strengthening the heart, making it easier for the heart to pump blood to the rest of the body.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Digoxin are dizziness, nausea, headache, rash, and diarrhea.

Stop using Digoxin and contact your doctor immediately if you have any of the following serious side effects such as:
• Bloody stools;
• Blurred or yellowed vision;
• Confusion;
• Fast, slow, or uneven heart rate;
• Signs of an allergic reaction, such as wheezing, hives, itching, breathing difficulties, swelling of the face, lips, or throat

Warnings and Interactions

Before using Lanoxin, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to any ingredient in the drug or have any other allergies. Digoxin is a tablet and should be taken orally (by mouth) as directed by your doctor. Swallow the tablet whole. Do not crush the drug. Take the drug at the same time every day to help you remember. If you are receiving the injection, Digoxin can be given as a shot into your muscle or as an injection into your vein. Continue using Digoxin regularly even if you feel fine and have no symptoms. Stopping the drug suddenly may make your condition worse. Your blood pressure and heart rate will need to be checked daily. Avoid becoming overheated or dehydrated during exercise, in hot weather, or by not drinking enough fluids. Digoxin side effects can occur more easily if you are dehydrated. Digoxin can affect your alertness or coordination. Do not drive or do other activities that require alertness or coordination until you know how digoxin affects you.

Before you start using Digoxin, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you:
• Become pregnant or nursing a child;
• Have a serious heart condition, such as sick sinus syndrome or AV block;
• Have a thyroid disorder;
• Have an electrolyte balance;
• Have ever had a heart attack;
• Have ever had slow heartbeats that caused you to faint;
• Have kidney disease;
• Have sudden fast heartbeats

Inform your doctor about all your medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. It is unknown if Digoxin will harm your unborn baby. However, having heart failure or atrial fibrillation in pregnancy may cause complications such as premature birth or low birth weight. Discuss the benefits and risks of using this drug in pregnancy with your doctor. Do not breastfeed when using Lanoxin. This medicine passes into breast milk and may harm a nursing infant. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding. There may be a drug interaction between Digoxin and other drugs, such as aspirin, carvedilol, furosemide, atorvastatin, metoprolol, levothyroxine, Xanax, etc.
