Usage

Eloxatin (Oxaliplatin) is a prescription medicine used to treat advanced colon or rectal cancer (cancer that begins in the large intestine) with other prescribed anticancer medication. The active ingredient in Eloxatin is Oxaliplatin. Oxaliplatin belongs to the class of medicines called platinum-containing antineoplastic agents. It works by killing cancer cells by inhibiting the synthesis of RNA, DNA, and protein in cancer cells. Eloxatin can stop cancer from growing by preventing them from dividing.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Eloxatin are nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, fever, constipation, loss of appetite, cough, and peripheral neuropathy (numbness or tingling sensation in the fingers or toes).

Stop using Eloxatin and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Black or tarry stools, or blood in your stools or urine;
• Chest pain;
• Dry cough;
• Fainting spell;
• Hearing disorders such as deafness;
Rhabdomyolysis;
• Seizure;
• Severe abdominal pain;
• Severe dizziness;
• Shortness of breath;
• Sudden confusion;
• Trouble breathing;
• Vision changes (such as blurred vision, temporary vision loss);
• Vomit that looks like coffee grounds

Warnings and Interactions

Before you start receiving Oxaliplatin infusion, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to Oxaliplatin, carboplatin (Paraplatin), cisplatin (Platinol), or other medications. Oxaliplatin may affect your fertility which could be irreversible. Do not conceive a child (get pregnant) while taking Oxaliplatin for both men and women. Barrier methods of contraception, such as condoms, are recommended. Temporary hair loss may rarely occur. Normal hair growth should return once you complete your treatment. Unless your doctor tells you otherwise, continue your regular diet. Oxaliplatin treatment may increase the risk of dizziness, nausea and vomiting, and other neurological symptoms that affect walking and balance. If this happens, you should not drive or operate machinery. If you have vision problems while taking Oxaliplatin concentrate for a solution for infusion, do not drive, operate heavy machines, or engage in dangerous activities. To reduce your risk of getting cut, bruised, or injured, use caution with sharp objects like razors and nail cutters and avoid activities such as contact sports.

Before you start receiving Oxaliplatin infusion, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:
• Allergic reaction to platinum-containing medicines such as carboplatin, cisplatin;
• An active or recent infection;
• An electrolyte imbalance such as low levels of calcium, potassium, or magnesium in your blood;
• A reduced number of blood cells;
• Any liver problems or abnormal liver function test results during your treatment;
• Heart disorders such as an abnormal electrical signal called prolongation of the QT interval, an irregular heartbeat, or a family history of heart problems;
• Nerve problem;
• Severe kidney problems

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant and plan to become pregnant or breastfeed a baby. Oxaliplatin is not recommended for use by pregnant women. Talk to your doctor about effective contraception before starting treatment. It would be best not to breastfeed while you are treated with Oxaliplatin. Oxaliplatin should not be used in children and adolescents below 18. There may be a drug interaction between Eloxatin and other drugs such as live vaccines including BCG vaccine, influenza virus vaccine quadrivalent, intranasal, measles mumps, and rubella vaccine, oral anticoagulants ('blood thinners') such as warfarin (coumadin), typhoid vaccine live, yellow fever vaccine, pimozide and varicella virus vaccine live.
