Usage

Hydrea (Hydroxyurea) is a prescription medication used to reduce the number of painful crises in people with sickle cell anaemia and to reduce the need for blood transfusions. Hydrea may also be used alone or with other medications to treat chronic myelogenous leukaemia (CML), a type of cancer of the white blood cells. The drug may also be used to treat certain types of head and neck cancer. The active ingredient in Hydrea is Hydroxyurea. Hydroxyurea belongs to the class of medication called antimetabolites. It works by preventing the formation of sickle-shaped red blood cells. It also works by slowing or stopping the growth of cancer cells in the body.

The common side effects of Hydrea are nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, and headache.

Stop using Hydrea and contact your doctor immediately if you have any of the following serious side effects such as:
• Bloody urine;

• Numbness or tingling in your hands or feet;
• Pain in the upper right part of the stomach

Hydroxyurea can make you more likely to get infections or worsen current infections. Stay away from anyone with an infection that may easily spread, such as chickenpox, COVID-19, measles, or flu.

Before you start using Hydrea, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you:

• Are undergoing radiation treatment;
• Become pregnant or nursing a child;
• Have blood or bone marrow problems;

• Have HIV infection;
