Product Details
Jakavi is a treatment medication used on myelofibrosis or polycythemia vera, which are both bone marrow disorders that affect how the body produces blood cells. It works by blocking certain enzymes that affect blood cell production.
The common side effects of Jakavi include: anemia, low platelets, dizziness, and headache.
The more serious side effects may include:
• Blisters or painful skin rash
• Changes in the size, shape, or color of a mole or skin lesion
• Low blood cell counts
• Nausea
• Painful or burning urination
• Problems with speech, thought, or muscle movement
• Signs of allergic reaction
• Signs of tuberculosis
• Vomiting
• Weakness
Precautions
You should not take Jakavi if you are allergic to Ruxolitinib, or if you have severe kidney disease. Before you start taking Jakavi, talk to your doctor about your medical history and about all the medications you currently take including OTC and herbal medications. Be sure to tell your doctor if you have liver or kidney disease, if you’re on dialysis, or if you’re pregnant or nursing. This medication can cause harm to an unborn or nursing baby. You should not use this medication while you are pregnant or nursing. Be sure to take Jakavi exactly as your doctor describes for you. Take Jakavi with or without food. This tablet may also be given via a nasogastric (NG) feeding tube. Store at room temperature away from heat and moisture. You should not stop this medication suddenly, so be sure to follow your doctor’s advice for tapering off your dose. There can be interactions between Jakavi and other medications. For example, fluconazole. You may need frequent medical tests to make sure Jakavi is not causing unwanted side effects. When you first start, you will likely have your blood tested every 2-4 weeks.
Questions and Answers
1. Can I have grapefruit while taking Jakavi?
Answer: Grapefruit and grapefruit juice can interact with this medication and affect how much of it ends up in the blood. Discuss with your doctor whether or not it’s best to eliminate grapefruit from your diet while on Jakavi.
2. How often will I need to have my blood tested while on this medication?
Answer: When you first start, you will need to have your blood tested every 2-4 weeks. Do not miss any follow-up visits and continue to have your blood tested, as your doctor requests.
3. Can I take Jakavi while I’m pregnant or nursing?
Answer: It isn’t known yet how Jakavi affects an unborn baby, therefore, it’s best to avoid this medication if you are pregnant. You should not breastfeed while on this medication, and wait at least 2 weeks after your last dose to start.
