Usage

Krintafel (Tafenoquine Succinate) is a prescription medication used to prevent and treat malaria caused by plasmodium vivax malaria. It may be used with Chloroquine to treat people with severe malaria. A mosquito bite causes malaria. The parasites in the mosquito bite can multiply and infect the red blood cells to cause malaria symptoms. The active ingredient in Krintafel is Tafenoquine Succinate. Tafenoquine Succinate belongs to a class of drugs called antimalarials. It works by interfering with the growth of parasites in the body by preventing the development of the erythrocytic forms of the parasite, which are responsible for relapses in P vivax malaria. Malaria is endemic in Africa, and it can cause serious illness if not treated immediately.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Krintafel are vomiting, nausea, headache, dizziness, and back pain.

Stop using Krintafel and contact your doctor immediately if you have any of the following serious side effects such as:
• Abnormal dream;
• Anxiety;
• Confusion;
• Darkening of your mouth or lips;
• Pale or yellow skin;
• Passage of dark color urine;
• Sudden drop in blood level (anemia)

Warnings and Interactions

Before taking Krintafel, inform your doctor if you are allergic to it or use other antimalaria treatments for your condition apart from chloroquine. It is a tablet and should be taken orally with a cup of water. Follow your prescription label carefully and use it as prescribed. A tablet should be taken twice daily, one in the morning and the other in the afternoon. It is often recommended to use insecticide-treated nets or insect repellents to prevent mosquito bites and reduce malaria. Do not miss your clinic appointment; your doctor may need to check your blood level. Discuss with your doctor if there is no improvement in your condition for alternative medicine.

Before you start using Krintafel, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you:
• Are pregnant or breastfeeding;
• Have glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency;
• Have kidney disease;
• Have liver cancer

Inform your doctor about all your medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. The use of Krintafel during pregnancy is not recommended. Hence, women of reproductive age should use effective contraception for three months after the tafenoquine dose. Krintafel may cause hemolytic anemia in a G6PD-deficient fetus. It passes into breast milk, and it can cause hemolytic anemia in a G6PD-deficient infant. Discuss with your doctor before treating malaria with Krintafel as a nursing mother. There may be a drug interaction between Krintafel and other drugs such as dofetilide, metformin, and other antimalaria.
