Macrobid Information

Macrobid Details (Brand and Generic)

CanadaPharmacyOnline.com currently offers the generic Nitrofurantoin Macrocrystals from Canada. The brand version is not available at the moment. Our customers may also purchase other Anti-Infective/Antibiotic Medications such as Augmentin and Ceftin.

Dosage

The generic Nitrofurantoin Macrocrystals is available in the strength of 50 mg and 100 mg capsule.

Usage

Macrobid (Nitrofurantoin Macrocrystals) is a prescription medication used to treat urinary tract infections caused by different types of bacteria. The active ingredient in the Macrobid capsule is Nitrofurantoin Macrocrystals. Nitrofurantoin belongs to the class of drugs called antibiotics. It works by killing the bacteria by entering their cells and damaging their genetic material. Using antibiotics when they are not needed increases your risk of getting an infection later that resists antibiotic treatment.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Macrobid are urine discoloration, nausea, vomiting, anorexia, arthralgia, cough, fatigue, numbness, and muscle weakness.

Stop using Macrobid and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Confusion;
• Eye pain or vision changes;
• Muscle weakness;
• Numbness, tingling, or pinprick sensation in the fingers and toes;
• Paleness;
• Persistent cough;
• Recurrent high-grade fever;
• Severe chest pain;
• Swelling of the eyes, face, mouth, lips, tongue, or throat;
• Severe diarrhea (watery or bloody stools) that may occur with or without fever and stomach cramps (may occur up to 2 months or more after your treatment);
• Yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, loss of appetite, fatigue, or pain or discomfort in the right upper stomach area

Warnings and Interactions

This medication is available as a capsule and should be taken by mouth with a cup of water. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take Nitrofurantoin exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or more often than your doctor prescribes.

You may notice a yellowish/brownish discoloration of your urine. Do not panic, as this is a common side effect of Nitrofurantoin, and your urine will clear after you complete your dosage.

Nitrofurantoin can make you feel dizzy or sleepy. If this happens, do not drive or handle heavy machinery until you feel better. You should feel better within a few days of using Nitrofurantoin for urinary tract infections. It would be best to keep taking your tablet until you finish your prescribed dosage. It would be better to do this even if you feel better. It will help you prevent the recurrence of such infections. However, you should tell your doctor if you do not start feeling better after taking the Macrobid capsule for 3 days or if you start to feel worse at any time.

Before you start using Macrobid, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:
• Anemia or low blood level;
• An inherited disorder such as glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6-PD) deficiency;
• An electrolyte imbalance in your blood;
• Diabetes mellitus;
• Difficulty in passing urine due to outlet obstruction;
• Kidney diseases;
• Lung problems;
• Low levels of vitamin B in your body;
Peripheral neuropathy or nerve damage

Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. If you become pregnant while taking Nitrofurantoin, call your doctor. Nitrofurantoin may cause problems in newborns following delivery if taken during the last month of pregnancy. Nitrofurantoin should not be taken by women in the last month of pregnancy. Nitrofurantoin passes into human breast milk. You should discontinue breastfeeding your baby. Talk to your doctor about alternative medication for your symptoms. There may be a drug interaction between Macrobid and other drugs such as probenecid and sulfinpyrazone, ciprofloxacin, delafloxacin, levofloxacin, and magnesium-containing antacid.
