Rifamate is also used to treat people with meningitis, leprosy, brucellosis, and serious staphylococcal infections. The active ingredient in Rifamate are Rifampin and Isoniazid. Rifampin and Isoniazid belong to the class of medication called antitubercular agents. It works by killing the mycobacteria that cause the infection.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Rifamate are nausea, vomiting, headache, abdominal pain, and body itching.

Stop using Rifamate and contact your doctor immediately if you have any of the following serious side effects such as:
• Persistence nausea and vomiting;
• Severe abdominal pain;
• Symptoms of deteriorating liver function such as yellowness of the eyes, the passage of dark urine, and pale bulky stool;
• Weakness or fatigue;
• Worsening of your condition

Warnings and Interactions

Rifamate comes as a capsule and should be taken orally with a cup of water on an empty stomach 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal. Rifamate should be taken once daily or according to your doctor’s instructions. When rifampin is used to prevent the spread of Neisseria meningitidis bacteria to other people, it is taken twice daily for two days or once daily for four days. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take rifampin exactly as directed. Continue to take Rifamate until you finish the prescription, even if you feel better, and be careful not to miss doses. If you stop taking rifampin too soon, your infection may not be completely treated, and the bacteria may become antibiotic-resistant. Avoid drinking alcoholic beverages when taking Rifamate capsules. Contact your doctor immediately if there is no improvement in your condition or your symptoms worsen.

Before you start using Rifamate, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you:
• Have asthma or other diseases of the lungs;
• Have cancer of the lungs;
• Have diabetes mellitus;
• Have kidney disease;
• Have liver disease

Inform your doctor about all your medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Do not use Rifamate antibiotics during pregnancy, especially during the last trimester. When administered during the third trimester, rifampin can cause bleeding in the mother and child. Discuss with your doctor before breastfeeding your child if you are treating tuberculosis with Rifamate capsules. There may be a drug interaction between Rifamate and other drugs such as Voclosporin, lovastatin, ketoconazole, saquinavir, and voriconazole.
