Usage

Taxotere (Docetaxel Injection Concentrate) is a prescription medication used to treat different types of cancers, such as lung, breast, prostate, stomach, and head/neck cancers. Cancer is a disease that occurs when the cells in the body grow and spread uncontrollably. Cancerous cells can invade and destroy healthy tissue and organs and form a mass called a tumor. The active ingredient in Taxotere is Docetaxel. Docetaxel belongs to the class of medication called taxanes. It works by stopping the growth and spread of cancer cells.

Warnings and Interactions

Before receiving Docetaxel Injection Concentrate, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to Docetaxel, other medications containing polysorbate 80, or have any other allergies. Taxotere is an injection. Your doctor will administer this medication as an infusion into your vein. If Taxotere gets on your skin during the infusion, it can harm you. If this happens, wash immediately with soap and water. Inform your doctor if you feel any burning, pain, or swelling around the IV needle when the medicine is injected. You may need frequent medical tests when receiving Docetaxel to be sure the medicine is not causing harmful effects. Taxotere may impair your thinking for a short time after each injection. Avoid driving or any hazardous activity until you can safely do so. Docetaxel may increase your risk of bleeding or bruising. Avoid activities that may increase your risk of bleeding or injury. Use extra care to prevent bleeding while shaving or brushing your teeth. Docetaxel can pass into body fluids (urine, feces, vomit). For at least 48 hours after you receive a dose, avoid allowing your body fluids to come into contact with your hands or other surfaces. Taxotere contains alcohol and may cause a feeling of drunkenness when the medicine is injected into your vein. Avoid drinking alcohol on the day of your Taxotere injection. This medication can decrease your body's ability to fight an infection. Avoid being near people who are sick or have infections. Tell your doctor immediately if you develop signs of infection, such as persistent sore throat, fever, or chills. Using Taxotere may increase your risk of developing other types of cancer (such as leukemia, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, or kidney cancer). This risk may continue for several months or years after you have received Taxotere. Ask your doctor if you have this risk.

Before you start using Taxotere, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you:
• Become pregnant or nursing a child;
• Have current or recent infections;
• Have fluid retention;
• Have heart disease;
• Have liver problems;
• Have low blood cell counts;
• Have non-small cell lung cancer and have been treated with chemotherapy containing platinum in the past;
• Have tumor lysis syndrome

Inform your doctor about all your medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Using Docetaxel in pregnancy by either the father or mother can harm an unborn baby and cause congenital disabilities. If you are a woman, do not use Docetaxel if you are pregnant. You may need to have a negative pregnancy test before starting this treatment. Use effective birth control to prevent pregnancy while you are using this medicine and for at least 6 months after your last dose. If you are a man, use effective birth control if your sex partner can get pregnant. Keep using birth control for at least 3 months after your last dose. Docetaxel may affect fertility in men. It may be harder for a man to get a woman pregnant while he is using Taxotere. However, birth control should still be used to prevent pregnancy. Docetaxel may pass into breast milk. It would be best to know that breastfeeding is not recommended while using this drug and for at least 1 week after your last dose. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding. There may be a drug interaction between Docetaxel Injection Concentrate and other drugs such as atorvastatin, carboplatin, dexamethasone, Neulasta, and xgeva.
