Dosage

Vfend is available in the strength of 200 mg tablets only. The generic Voriconazole is available in the strength of 50 mg and 200 mg tablets.

Usage

Vfend (Voriconazole) is a prescription medication used to treat fungal infections such as invasive aspergillosis (a fungal disease that begins in the lungs and spreads through the bloodstream to other organs) and esophageal candidiasis. The active ingredient in Vfend is Voriconazole. Voriconazole belongs to the class of medication called anti-fungals. It works by stopping the growth of fungi.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Vfend are nausea, constipation, diarrhea or flatulence, abdominal pain, and visual disturbances.

Stop using Vfend and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Loss of appetite;
• Nausea and vomiting that doesn't stop;
• Peripheral neuropathy, such as tingling/numbness in hands and feet;
• Poor concentration

Warnings and Interactions

Before using Voriconazole, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it, have other azole anti-fungals (such as itraconazole ketoconazole), or have any other allergies. Vfend is a tablet that should be taken on an empty stomach, either an hour before or 2 hours after food. The usual dose is 200 mg twice daily. Your doctor may prescribe a dose if you have a lower body weight. The dosage is based on your medical condition, weight, response to treatment, and other medications you may be taking. Your liver and renal function will be monitored; do not miss your clinic appointment. Avoid alcoholic beverages because they can increase the risk of severe liver problems. Continue to use this medication until the total prescribed amount is finished, even if symptoms disappear after a few days. Stopping the medication too early may result in a return of the infection. Tell your doctor if your condition does not get better or if it gets worse.

Before you start using Vfend, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:
• Heart problems such as irregular heartbeat, heart failure, slow heartbeat, QT prolongation in the EKG;
• Kidney problems;
• Liver problems

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. You should not become pregnant while using Voriconazole. Voriconazole may harm an unborn baby. Ask about reliable forms of birth control while using this medication. If you become pregnant, talk to your doctor right away about the risks and benefits of this medication. It is unknown if this medication passes into breast milk. Because of the possible risk to the infant, breastfeeding is not recommended while using this medication. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding. There may be a drug interaction between Vfend and other drugs, such as alfuzosin, finerenone, cobimetinib, chloroquine, pimozide, quinidine, lurasidone, and Lefamulin. The medication should be stored in the original container at room temperature and kept out of the reach and sight of children.
