Usage

Benlysta (Belimumab) is a prescription medication used with other medications to treat reduce lupus disease activity and reduce the risk of severe lupus flares resulting from systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and lupus nephritis. This may lower damage to muscles, joints, skin, kidneys, and other organ systems. Lupus is a disease that occurs when the body’s immune system attacks its tissues and organs. The active ingredient in Benlysta is Belimumab. Belimumab belongs to the class of medication called monoclonal antibodies. It works by decreasing the effect of a certain protein (B-lymphocyte stimulator) that is increased in people with active lupus. This may help decrease some of the symptoms of lupus.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Benlysta are diarrhea, fever, nausea, sleeping difficulties, and sore throat.

Stop using Benlysta and contact your doctor immediately if you have any of the following serious side effects such as:
• Bloody diarrhea;
• Cough with mucus;
• Painful urination;
• Signs of an allergic reaction, such as rash, breathing difficulties, swelling of the face, mouth, tongue, or throat;
• Skin sores

Warnings and Interactions

Before using Belimumab, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to any ingredient in the drug or have any other allergies. Benlysta is an injection, and it is administered into a vein over one hour by your doctor. You may have to receive this medication, every two weeks for the first 3 doses and then, every 4 weeks after. Your dosage may be based on your weight. If you are administering this injection at home, ask your doctor for instructions. Prepare the injection only when you are ready to give it. Take the syringe or injection pen out of the refrigerator and let it reach room temperature for 30 minutes before injecting your dose. Do not use if the medicine has been left at room temperature longer than 12 hours. Do not put it back into the refrigerator. If you have infusion reactions while or after receiving this medication, inform your doctor immediately. Benlysta may lower your ability to fight infections, which may make you more likely to get a serious infection. Stay away from anyone who has chickenpox, flu, COVID 19, or any infection that may easily spread.

Before you start using Benlysta, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you:
• Become pregnant or nursing a child;
• Have a history of infections;
• Have cancer;
• Have mental or mood problems;
• Have recently received a vaccine

Inform your doctor about all your medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Benlysta may affect your baby’s immune system if used during pregnancy. Use effective birth control to prevent pregnancy while using Benlysta and for at least 4 months after your last dose. However, if you are alreasy pregnant, SLE may cause complications like worsened lupus, eclampsia, premature birth, miscarriage, or growth problems in your unborn baby. The drug should only be used in pregnancy if the benfits outweigh the risks. Belimumab may pass into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding. There may be a drug interaction between Belimumab and other drugs such as azathioprine.
